Recommend a four wheel drive?
I now have a 50 mile round trip across Woodhead Pass over the Pennines, then on some steep country roads, to visit my girlfriend. I drive 32,000 miles per year (mostly motorway) and currently own a 2011 E-Class coupe, which I love - but which I expect to be useless in snow, ice, etc.
Would winter tyres make any difference to safety or should I buy a 4x4 - and what would you recommend - a car-type 4x4 (eg Audi A5 quattro) or more of an SUV?

Winter tyres will make more of a difference than four wheel drive, but obviously four wheel drive with winter tyres is the best solution.
