Flawed wheel drive

We'd welcome your advice on our slightly unusual problem. We live in a remote rural position 3/4 mile down a steepish unmade bridlepath and in winter we struggle to get out to work and leave our VW Tiguan 2WD on the nearest B road. We are considering either buying snow chains or a very cheap 4x4 off road vehicle which we would never use on the road as we can park it on the track adjacent the B road. Would snow chains get us up a steepish track? If not what type of 4x4 is best?

Bit remiss to have bought a 2WD rather than a 4WD Tiguan. But why not try a set of winter tyres on it? They are generally more effective than 4WD. Though 4WD with winter tyres is obviously best of the lot. Check www.tyrereviews.co.uk
