Why did my insurance premium increase by £100 when I got married and took my husband's name?

I’ve just received a £429.57 renewal quote from 1st Central to re-insure my 2007 Suzuki Grand Vitara, kept on private property in Coniston, Cumbria. Having recently got married, the renewal also involves changing my name on the policy. According to the people I spoke to at 1st Central my new marital status immediately adds £100 to the quote, taking it up to £529.00 (regardless of the fact that they insured me last year, same partner, same car, same address). Are married people simply more accident-prone or is this a bizarre form of sex discrimination? Clearly my husband’s name won’t be changing.

Shouldn't do. Being married and having both partners on the insurance usually reduces the premium considerably rather than increasing it. Of course, this depends on the claims record of your partner. If he has a recent conviction or a claim he will put your insurance up.
