How can I persuade Volkswagen to contribute to repairing my Touran's faulty ABS module?

I'm trawling the internet at the moment because my Volkswagen Touran has the ABS issue mentioned in your Telegraph web page. Unfortunately I'm a new owner of a 2005 car that has just developed the problem. The service history by the previous owner is poor, but it looks like a solid service history wouldn't have prevented this problem anyway. My car has 50,000 miles, so nothing excessive, yet the car has no warranty.

There seems to be no pattern to what Volkswagen offers. There are stories on the net regarding cars imported from abroad receiving 100 per cent compensation and cars with little or no service history getting the same. The message seems to be to keep politely pushing Volkswagen, and you may start to see the benefits. I wondered if you had any advice or feedback from other readers in a similar situation? Surely with such a common fault Volkswagen shouldn't be arguing about replacements but looking after their customers.

You're right. On the basis of the feedback I get, Volkswagen is now being more generous about this, replacing the units on Volkswagen-serviced cars up to four years old and charging only a minimum on cars 4–5 years old.

Contact volkswagencustomercare@volkswagen.co.uk. If you get nowhere that way, or face a bill of more than £600, then have the module repaired by www.ecutesting.co.uk or by www.sinspeed.co.uk.
