Petrol or diesel?
I am looking to buy a second hand Audi A4 Avant or BMW 3 Series Touring. My budget is £8,000-£10,000, for which I expect to be able to buy an average mileage car from about 2005.
It will be used for a daily commute of only 9 miles each way. Additional evening and weekend use will take the mileage to around 10,000 miles a year. The car will also be used to tow a caravan say 6 times a year to various locations in the UK. What is best in terms of cost of ownership- petrol or diesel?

A BMW chain cam diesel without a particulate filter. Avoid the Audi 2.0TDI PD because it needs a timing belt every 4 years and has a serious oil pump problem.
