Planning for the winter

Now winter has passed, I'm starting to research and plan for next winter.

At first I was assuming that getting rid of my BMW 318D would be the best plan, but I have seen a lot of advice around getting winter tyres.

So, which would be better, getting a new car more capable in the snow, or would winter tyres for the BMW be sufficient?

BMW does winter wheel and tyre packs for this model for about £800 and now is a very good time to buy a set rather than in October/November when demand will exceed supply.
