Closing the stability door
I have a 2004 VW Golf 1.6FSI SE. The ESP light came on recently. I took it to a VW approved workshop that carried out a computer based diagnostic check. They have told me that I need a new component VAG COM. The cost of the part is £1,068 plus £70 labour plus VAT Total £1,308. The car is only 5years of age and has 36,000 on the clock. They also said that this is the 3rd VW in recent weeks to have this problem and it would be mid October before they could get the said part as they are not in the country. They have told me it is safe to drive but will not have the ABS system. Do you think I have any recourse with VW has the cost is excessive nearly 10% of the purchase price. I did not extend the warranty outside the 3 years.

A brake pressure sensor inside the Teves ABS module is failing. I was getting around 30 such reports a week, even on cars just out of the 3-year warranty. However, the fault does not disable the cars and VW in the UK has now stated it will meet 100% of the cost of repairing or replacing the unit if the car has a full VW service history, and will be sympathetic to claims if the car has been independently serviced. Though I think this will depend on the brake fluid having been replaced every 2 years. VW’s official response is: “We are aware of some issues affecting certain models within the Volkswagen passenger car range with the ABS control module. Reported instances with the Touran model where we suspect an ABS module failure and the vehicle has service history within the Volkswagen Retailer Network, customers will receive a 100 per cent contribution towards the cost of the repairs. In addition, regardless of the vehicle's history, all cases will be dealt with in a sympathetic manner. We have been in communication with VOSA on this issue and we agree with their view that this is not a safety issue. Drivers are warned of an issue with a clear warning light and are advised to take their vehicle to their local retailer. In all instances the ESP may not function when the warning light illuminates however the ABS function remains operational and the fundamental safety of the vehicle is unaffected.”
