Touran sick, parked
I purchased a VW Touran, 1.4 TSI Sport model, in July 2007 from Motorpoint. It was second-hand and was first registered on 01/09/2006. In September 2007 the ESP warning light came on - "ESP Off" was showing near the gear stick and the warning light on the dashboard. I took it to my local VW dealership, they advised that it needed a new ABS Control unit and completed the work under warranty in October 2007. My warranty ran out on 1 Sept 2009, and on 30 Sept 2009 the ESP light came on again - same problem as before. I took it back to the dealership who confirmed that it needs a new ABS Control unit (again!). The staff member said that they would contact VW regarding the cost. They rang me to clarify where I had been getting it serviced. I confirmed that it had not been at VW dealerships but at a local garage (who uses VW approved parts). They then came back to me and said that unfortunately VW is not prepared to offer any "goodwill" towards the cost of the work because I had not been getting it serviced at the VW dealerships. The staff member indicated that it would have been likely that they would have covered some, if not all, of the cost, if it was VW serviced. So the car was 29 days out of warranty when the fault occurred and had only 19,000 miles on it. The problem had been fixed at 13 months old and now occurs again just under 2 years later, which makes me wonder if the replacement part that I was given was faulty in the first place, as I feel sure that these expensive parts are not only meant to last 2 years. The dealership has said that the work will cost £1,023. I have advised them that I cannot fund this and the reason I don't get it serviced at VW is that I cannot afford the extra money that this costs in comparison to my local garage.

This is the standard fault outlined in the column recently and in car by
car breakdown at www.honestjohn.co.uk as follows:- Updated 21-9-2009: ESP warning light can indicate Fault Code "Boost Pressure Sensor G201". This is embedded inside Teves Mk 60 ABS systems and requires replacement of ABS control unit/pump. Seems to be age-related, occurring mainly in 3 - 5 year old cars. Does not necessarily lead to an MoT failure. If car has been VAG maintained, VAG will usually meet 100% of replacement cost. If not VAG will still usually help towards the £1,500 cost of replacement.
