I-can

It was interesting to see the comments from a reader about the new Honda Jazz and its automated manual gearbox. I have now had a Honda Jazz ES fitted with this gearbox for just over a month having traded down from an automatic S-Type Jaguar. I must reassure others that you do very quickly become accustomed to the new type of automatic gearbox and it is possible to drive it around town very smoothly after a while. The main benefit of this type of gearbox is
the fuel consumption, which averages over 50mpg. As a bonus, with 100bhp, the performance of the Jazz is quite lively and on longer journeys I spend almost as much time in the fast lane as I used to with the Jag.

Fair enough. I will run your e-mail as a counterpoint. But Honda has lost a lot of sales by fitting the i-shift instead of a CVT or the 120PS 1.5 engine with 5-speed torque converter auto which is vastly better, as tested at:- www.honestjohn.co.uk/road_tests/index.htm?id=363
(Yes, I had to go to the other side of the world at my own expense to find one to drive.) The argument that the i-shift creates less CO2 fell flat when Honda failed to certificate it under 121g/km as promised.
