Pensionable purchase

I am a pensioner and as my existing car has developed expensive gearbox problems I am in the market for a new motor. I need to have room for my granddaughter (in a car seat) and space behind for my two spaniels. I would like something that is good to drive but I also need it to be economical and reliable. I am considering Skoda Fabia, Nissan Qashqai, Ford Focus and Fusion, and KIA Cee’d (which I note you have recommended before). I do not know whether to go for petrol or diesel in the interests of economy, as I will need to keep the car for 5 years. Unfortunately my budget is only £14,000.

Your budget is perfectly adequate. The main benefit of a KIA Cee'd is its 7 year 100,000 mile warranty. A similar Hyundai i30 carries a 5 year unlimited mileage warranty. Better to go for 1.4 or 1.6 petrol for moderate use. Both engines are chain cam. Or think of something a bit more upright and easier to get in and out of such as a Nissan Note or a Honda Jazz. Both are very versatile, in different ways, the Note with a sliding, folding rear seat and the Jazz with lift up or fold down rear seats.
