Sunbeam towboat
I’m just about to buy a 2007 Freelander 2 Diesel Auto but need a detachable towbar to tow a boat trailer occasionally for a short distance. I have been quoted between £325 (Non Land Rover) to £792 (dealer fitted with standard twin socket electrics). It appears I can buy the genuine bits for £450 delivered to me in Swansea. I am tempted to fit this myself as I am told the electric plug-in is simple (behind a rear quarter panel) and the threaded mounting holes are already part of the vehicle. Apparently there is a software download required after fitting to tell the electronics that a towbar is installed but that the dealer cost for this is about £35. Any feedback or suggestions gratefully accepted.

I don't know any better than you. You seem to have researched this very well. I had better point out that a non EC Type Approved towbar is illegal. And you need to inform your insurer of any modification to the car at all, which includes fitting a towbar.
