Smartie pants
Like CW of Moseley, I am experiencing much below indicated fuel economy from my new model Smart ForTwo. Friends with original model Smarts certainly seem to do better. In Surrey, with endless speed limits, speed bumps, cameras and congestion it is frequently hard to get out of 3rd or 4th gear (5th requires 45mph minimum) and so I have not yet seen more than around 40mpg, even when a longer journey is included. I had my Smart checked by the dealer early on in its life (purchased September 2007) when I complained about this higher petrol consumption and was told it was normal and that better mileage figures should begin after 2-3,000 miles. At 4,000 miles there has been no change. At a recent service I discussed again the high fuel consumption but was told I was not alone in my experience and the dealer had no answer other than to point out the different between EU test conditions and day-to-day motoring in Surrey. As I purchased the Smart for local journeys it is particularly disappointing. Other than that I love the Smart, although I am tempted by the FIAT 500.

My 500 1.2 petrol, also driven mostly in Surrey, is still averaging more than 50mpg. I have now received four reader reports of poor economy from the latest Smart Fortwo. In response, MB has introduced an automatic stop-start system to all new Smarts that should improve economy.
