Slippery clutchtomer
About 3 months ago I bought a Renault Clio from a faraway franchised dealer with a 1-year warranty. I took it into my local Renault dealer recently to check out what I believed was a slipping clutch and they confirmed my diagnosis. The car is a 2006 reg. with 14,000 miles on the clock and had one previous owner. The dealer told me that the gearbox would need to be stripped to discover the cause at a cost of £600-£700, and that the "wear and tear" clause might preclude any re-imbursement for a replacement clutch if this was the cause. Can you advise whether (assuming a replacement clutch is required, which seems to be likely) I can claim that the dealer is responsible whatever the driving style of the previous owner?

The dealer cannot legally do this. The law assumes that if anything major goes wrong with a car during the first 6 months after purchase, then the basic fault was there at the time of purchase. The dealer either has to fix it free of charge, or take the car back and refund your money. If he doesn't, the OFT is backing local Trading Standards to come down on him like a ton of bricks.
