I am thinking of changing my 2006 Focus 1.6 (113) Zetec for a new Octavia with the 1.4 turbo petrol engine. I would appreciate your view on small turbo petrol engines in general and this one in particular. Do they still need to be idled after a long run before switching off and are they likely to be as reliable and long lasting as a normally aspirated engine?

Excellent engine. Renault, Vauxhall and FIAT now do 1.4 turbo engines as well. I’d be interested if you can actually get the Octavia with one. Potential Golf buyers are being quoted a long wait. I should add that readers are not finding it brilliantly economical. 37 - 40mpg is typical with a DSG box. Not 45mpg +.
