Crusher, or Russia?

I bought a brand new Skoda Octavia Elegance Estate costing £15,665 after a total Scrappage/Dealer/Manufacturer allowance of £3,500. This will bring a gleam into the eyes of the Dealer, the Manufacturer, and of course the Government, who of course immediately get their £1,000 contribution back and more, via VAT, VED, higher insurance tax etc. My problem is that the BMW 316i I had to scrap, looked wonderful, having no rust on the bodywork, a few minor mechanical items which could be repaired, and still drove beautifully. However it was a 92,000 mile, 1998 model, and I am told it had a value of just £500, so the scrappage allowance, made it a "No Brainer" purely on the economics. I hear that many good looking vehicles were being consigned to the crushers, and I wonder if others, like me are upset at the thought of what they are actually being coerced to do by this Government scheme. What are your thoughts about this? Do you have any words of comfort?

True, it killed some good cars. But others sneaked out of the back
door and were exported to Eastern Europe and Russia. The scrapper simply shows the government inspector a bale of scrap and says it was your car. So your car may still be very much alive. Not that anyone anywhere has been cheated out of anything, because as you state the taxpayer immediately got back more in VAT than the £1,000 it forked out, and would not have got this if no sale had taken place.
