Extra Sensory

When considering buying a new Skoda Octavia 1.4TSI, I asked two local dealerships about the advisability of ordering the electronic stability programme (ESP) as a factory-fitted extra. Both were negative, saying that its main components, ABS and traction control, were fitted as standard. I thought full ESP would help in snow, but was concerned that it may be another fancy bit of electronics to go wrong. The cost of full ESP was £317. What would your advice have been? I note that all VWs and Audis have ESP as standard.

ESP actually hinders in snow. In snow and ice it's best to switch it off because it counters the driver's normal reactions.
