Volkswagen Passat Estate (2015 – 2024) Review
Volkswagen Passat Estate (2015 – 2024) At A Glance
The Volkswagen Passat Estate is in the enviable position of being one of the defining cars in the large estate class that big rivals like the Skoda Superb, Audi A4 Avant and Ford Mondeo Estate are judged against.
Like its saloon counterpart, the Volkswagen Passat Estate is a significant step forward from the previous model. It’s sharper-looking, more spacious, more comfortable and packed with the latest technology.
The all important load space has been increased - up to 650 litres from 603 litres, expandable to a huge 1780 litres by folding the seats. But not only is the load area large but it is also user-friendly.
The load lip is low and the opening is wide, so getting items in and out is easy. There’s a variable height boot floor which is simple to adjust and the split rear seats tumble forward with one-touch levers, leaving a flat load area ideal for bigger items.
Like the saloon, the Passat Estate has a diesel-only engine range with four choices, ranging from a 1.6-litre with 120PS to 2.0-litre with 150PS, 190PS or 240PS in BiTDI form. The latter has a very impressive peak torque figure of 500Nm and is offered exclusively in conjunction with a DSG automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.
The Passat Estate is a good choice of tow car, rated for braked trailers up to 2200kg for the top 240PS model, or 2000kg for the 150PS diesel. One piece of technology that will really help is trailer assist, which will reverse a trailer in a straight line or at a set angle automatically. It also includes a camera to aid with hooking up.
Trailer assist is one of several high tech features, including advanced cruise control with lane assist. When specified in conjunction with a DSG gearbox this can bring a car to a halt in low-speed traffic, then follow the car in front at slow speeds automatically. The system also includes collision mitigating braking, plus there is a head-up display on offer.

Volkswagen Passat Estate (2015 – 2024) handling and engines

Volkswagen Passat Estate (2015 – 2024): Handling and ride quality
The ride quality is good, offering comfort over lumps and bumps but without excessive body roll through bends. Long distance driving is made easier by comfortable seats with plenty of adjustment, as well as systems like adaptive cruise control.
Through corners the Passat isn’t particularly fun to drive but it is predictable and safe, with plenty of traction.
The steering is nicely weighted, but if you want to configure it to your own tastes then various modes are available on SE models and up. The different modes also alter the throttle response, with settings for economy, comfort, sport plus a customisable setting. Handling and grip is improved on 235/45 R18 tyres but they feel every bump and ridge in the road, even on 'Comfort' setting.
Volkswagen Passat Estate (2015 – 2024): Engines
You’re spoilt for choice here, with petrol, diesel and even hybrid, but it’s important to consider what you plant to do with your Passat before making a decision.
The basic 1.6-litre diesel is fine if you’re just pottering around but if you load it up with people and/or luggage you may find it’s not enough. For those on a budget the 1.5-litre 150PS petrol has more urge, costs less to buy and is still pretty efficient.
The 2.0-litre TDI diesel unit has 150PS and blends enough performance to carry heavier loads with good fuel consumption. The 190PS diesel is even more capable but more thirsty, while the 240PS BiTDi unit is pricey but fast. Ignore the 272PS petrol unless you want a fast estate, it’s expensive and thirsty. The GTE hybrid is clever and nice to drive, but is best for company car buyers.
Volkswagen Passat Estate (2015 – 2024): Safety
The Volkswagen Passat received an impressive five star rating from EuroNCAP when it was tested in 2015. It scored 85 per cent for adult protection, 87 per cent for child protection, 66 per cent for child mitigation and safety assist scored 76 per cent.
All Passats are fitted with adaptive cruise control that incorporates automatic emergency braking for city environments, pre-crash preventative occupant protection and lane assist. Models equipped with the DSG transmission also benefit from Traffic Jam Assist which can stop and restart the vehicle in traffic. There are few safety options available, other than 360-degree cameras, park assist and a head-up display.
Volkswagen Passat Estate (2015 – 2024): Towing
The towing capacity for the Passat Estate varies considerably depending on the specification you choose. Go for an SE model with the 1.5-litre petrol engine and it’s 1600kg braked and 730kg braked. It’s 1500kg for the 1.6-litre TDI braked but 750kg unbraked. The 2.0-litre TDI model pushes this up to 2000kg braked, and 4MOTION models with four-wheel-drive can tow up to 2200kg braked.

Volkswagen Passat Estate (2015 – 2024): Practicality
It’s the same when you get to the rear seats too, which are big enough to comfortably swallow taller adults. Legroom is excellent; adults over six feet tall will be fine, and the same applies for headroom too, and the doors open wide so it’s easy to get children in and out too.
As for the boot, it’s bettered only by the Skoda Superb Estate. There’s 650 litres available with the rear seats in place and 1,780 litres with the rear seats folded. You get a split-level boot floor and an electric tailgate as standard too, while the seat backs split 40/20/40 for maximum versatility.
Volkswagen Passat Estate (2015 – 2024): Quality and finish
The Passat Estate is impressively finished, with a quality feel permeating everything from the seat upholstery and soft touch plastics through to controls and switches. The classy, modern layout incorporates a stylish motif stretching from one side of the dashboard to the other through the vents, with a small analogue clock in the centrepiece.
You also get a clear sense that this is a car that has been well constructed too. Whether it’s prodding a button or closing the lid of the cubby under the armrest, everything clicks and slides as it should, and feels like it will continue to do so for thousands of miles.
Volkswagen Passat Estate (2015 – 2024): Infotainment
All variants of the Passat get a touchscreen system as standard, which includes Bluetooth and DAB radio. It’s easy to use, but does without navigation unless you specify it or opt for the SE Business model. There are steering wheel controls for most infotainment functions, plus a little display which shows navigation directions or trip information inbetween the clear rev counter and speedo.
There’s also a larger, better touchscreen system on offer at additional cost. It has an advanced navigation system with a neat function called ‘rubberband’, which lets you drag a route onto the map manually with your finger, a bit like you can with Google Maps on a desktop computer. It also has 64GB of onboard storage and preloaded European mapping.
Volkswagen Passat Estate (2015 – 2024) value for money
Volkswagen Passat Estate (2015 – 2024): Prices
One criticism frequently levelled at the Passat is its price compared to its key competitors. The basic SE model with the 1.5-litre petrol engine and a manual gearbox is just shy of £28,000, compared to under £26,000 for a Skoda Superb with the same engine and under £24,000 for an equivalent Ford Mondeo Estate.
SE trim is reasonably specified too, although if you plan to tow or move bigger loads you’ll want the 2.0-litre diesel engine, which pushes the price to £30,360 with a manual gearbox. It’s also an extra £1100 to bump SE up to SE Nav, so there’s a strong case for sticking with the screen mirroring as your sat-nav, although you will have to do without DAB.
At the top end of the range, the 2.0-litre TDI 190PS version with four-wheel-drive is only available in R-Line or R-Line Edition trim which means a price tag of at least £40,450 if you need serious towing capacity - the equivalent Skoda Superb is only £35,000, again with the same engine and transmission.
As for used values, pre-reg and late versions are available with substantial discounts - a quick search turned up a 1.5 TSI EVO R-Line specification car, registered in 2020 with less than 20 miles on the clock for £30,000 - a saving of nearly £5000.
As for older cars, the earliest examples are now under £10,000. We found a 2015 2.0-litre TDI in SE Business trim for 90,000 miles for just over £8000, or a sporty 2.0-litre TDI model in GT trim from 2015 and with 80,000 miles for £10,000.
Volkswagen Passat Estate (2015 – 2024): Running Costs
Unsurprisingly the 272PS 2.0-litre TSI petrol is the thirstiest, on account of having the most powerful petrol engine added to four-wheel-drive, with a claimed combined figure of 33.2mpg. Steer clear of the larger petrol versions though and the Passat can be fuelled at a reasonable cost.
Similarly, the insurance groupings for the Passat are lower than you might expect, as long as you choose the model with care. The 1.6 TDI in SE trim manages to get down to just group 12, although the same trim jumps up to group 20 with the 1.5-litre EVO petrol engine and 21 for the 2.0-litre TDI.
Move up to SEL trim and it’s group 15 for the 1.6-litre TDI, 20 for the 1.5-litre petrol and 25 for the 190PS petrol. In case you’re considering it, the GTE model is in group 28, while the 2.0-litre BiTDi and 272PS petrol are both in group 33 - more than double that of the basic model.

You may have to pay a little more for the privilege of a Passat in the first place, but broadly speaking the specification is strong.
On the entry SE model you get 17-inch alloy wheels, brushed chrome interior details, leather-trimmed multi-function steering wheel, 6.5-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, eight speakers, automatic post-collision braking, keyless start, two rear Isofix mounting points, air conditioning, electric front and rear windows, electronic parking brake with hill hold, plus stop/start and LED headlights.
The most significant omission is DAB radio, which needs SE Nav trim or above, but for most this spec will be more than enough.
If you’re looking for something more luxurious it’s worth going all the way up to the R-Line Edition; you ge larger alloy wheels but with the Dynamic Chassis Control so you still get a decent ride quality, as well as three-zone climate control, LED headlights and the Active Info Display.

Volkswagen reveals new Passat Estate
For the first time, there will also be a Passat with a plug-in hybrid drive system. In its design and in the advanced features it offers, the new Passat bridges the gap between the upper medium and premium class.
At 4,767 mm long, the saloon is two millimetres shorter than the previous model, while the wheelbase is 79 mm longer at 2,791 mm and therefore the body overhangs significantly shorter. At the same time, the Passat is 14 mm lower at 1,456 mm, and 12 mm wider at 1,832 mm.
Because of the optimised engine orientation, it was possible to lower significantly the bonnet and shift the windscreen towards the rear. This ‘cab backward design’ helps to create the impression of a premium-class car. Extremely precisely drawn edges and creases which develop individual light-reflecting surfaces help to continue this impression.
All models of Passat have LED rear lights, while the higher-specification versions feature a distinctive horizontal tail light signature that switches over to a vertically oriented brake light signature under braking. Headlights are halogen or LED. In conjunction with Dynamic Light Assist, one of the two LED headlight options automatically adjusts the beam for maximum illumination of the road without dazzling other traffic.
Despite exterior dimensions that are actually marginally smaller than those of the previous Passat, interior space is improved, with more leg- and head-room, as well as increased luggage space.
The interior has been developed to match the sophisticated exterior of the eighth-generation Passat. New technologies to be offered on the new Passat include the optional Active Info Display, which replaces the instrument cluster with a fully configurable interactive 12.3-inch TFT display; a heads-up display; the latest Modular Infotainment System, including the Car-Net remote app; a further-developed 360-degree Area View function; and the latest generation of Park Assist.
A highlight of the Passat’s new range of engines is a high-performance, four-cylinder, 2.0-litre, bi-turbo diesel delivering 240 PS and an extraordinary 500 Nm from 1,750 rpm. This engine will be available only with a new seven-speed DSG gearbox and 4MOTION all-wheel drive. A plug-in hybrid model will also be offered, with potential to travel 31 miles on battery power alone, and with a maximum range of around 600 miles.

Passat Estate BlueMotion launched
Both Passat saloon and Estate models return 76.3 mpg and emit just 95g/km of carbon dioxide. Such efficiency is made possible thanks to the installation of a modified version of the Passat’s entry-level 1.6-litre TDI 120 PS engine with SCR, as well as BlueMotion modifications.
The engine’s maximum power is produced at 3,600 rpm, with torque of 250 Nm developed at 1,750 rpm. In Estate guise, 0 to 62 mph takes 11 seconds with a top speed of 129 mph exceeding those of the standard 1.6-litre car. The 1.6-litre TDI BlueMotion is available in combination with a six-speed manual gearbox only.

Petrol engines added
Ranging from a 1.4-litre TSI 125 PS to a 2.0-litre TSI 220 PS, and also including the impressive 1.4-litre TSI 150 PS with Active Cylinder Technology. All apart from the 1.8 TSI and 2.0 TSI are below 130g/km CO2.
The new petrol-powered Passat models – which exactly mirror the equipment specifications of their diesel siblings on a like-for-like trim basis – sit alongside the existing diesel engines in the extensive Passat family, and will be introduced at an RRP roughly £1,900 below their diesel equivalents, making them a compelling alternative for many buyers.
Sporty R-Line trim made also available with an entry-level engine in Passat. This broadens choice as well as making R-Line ownership more accessible – with the new 1.4-litre TSI 125 PS Passat R-Line a particularly attractive proposition for style-and budget-conscious buyers.

Passat specification updated
LED headlights are now standard on the SE Business, GT and Alltrack trims and the Passat R-Line now features Premium LED headlights. LED headlights replace the previous halogen units, and include 12 separate LED daytime running lights that also perform the indicator function.
On the Passat R-Line, the Premium LED headlights feature dual ‘U-shaped’ LED daytime running lights and dynamic curve lighting. Here, the lights swivel as the steering wheel is turned giving greater visibility of approaching corners and an early warning of potential hazards.
Every new Passat now comes with Volkswagen’s App-Connect system as standard. App-Connect enables the driver or a passenger to link their smartphone to the car via a USB cable. The screen of the phone is then ‘mirrored’ onto the Passat’s infotainment touchscreen.
This enables the user to play music and playlists on the move. The car will also read out text messages and allow the user to dictate a reply. A wide variety of other apps are available, too, including Spotify and Skype. App-Connect works with Apple CarPlay™, Android Auto™ and MirrorLink™ which means it is compatible with the vast majority of mobile smartphones.
From today the upgraded Passat SE Business, R-Line and Alltrack models will feature heated front seats as standard. Already on the Passat GT’s extensive equipment list, this means nearly every new Passat from now on will include this welcome addition.
SE Business models now feature 3Zone climate control. This means the driver and front passenger can set the temperature for their area of the car. There are separate controls for the rear passengers, too, and so the temperature of these three ‘zones’ of the Passat can be individually controlled. 3Zone climate control was already standard on the Passat GT, R-Line and Alltrack models.
Another update for the Passat SE Business is the addition of a colour multi-function display. The multi-function computer gives the driver a variety of information about the status of their Passat.

SCR 'Twin-Dosing' introduced in VW Passat 2.0TDI Evo 110kW reducing NOx emissions by 80%.
Adblue is injected selectively upstream of two SCR catalytic converters which are arranged in series. The system is used in the new Passat 2.0 TDI Evo with 110 kW (150 PS), which already meets the technical requirements of the future Euro 6d emission standard as a result. Current RDE1 (real driving emissions) measurements confirm Volkswagen's type approval.
Volkswagen will now gradually introduce the new technology to all models with 2.0 TDI Evo engines. The new 2020 Golf VIII features twin dosing in all TDI variants.
The twin dosing process requires a second SCR catalytic converter located in the underbody of the vehicle. Since the distance to the engine is greater, the exhaust temperature upstream of the second catalytic converter can be as much as 100°C lower. This expands the window for aftertreatment of exhaust gases: even at exhaust gas temperatures close to the engine of +500°C, the system is still able to achieve very high conversion rates. In addition, a blocking catalytic converter downstream of the SCR system prevents excess ammonia slip.
The twin dosing process compensates for a system-based disadvantage of diesel engines. Modern diesel engines emit less CO2 than petrol engines because diesel fuel has a higher energy density and the combustion process is more efficient. Diesel engines are also subject to special requirements, however, since fuel combustion takes place with excess air. The main constituent of air is nitrogen and this reacts with oxygen during combustion, thereby forming nitrogen oxides.
Ammonia is needed to reduce the nitrogen oxides produced in diesel engines. It is injected as an aqueous reducing agent (AdBlue) via a dosing module into the exhaust gas upstream of an SCR catalytic converter. Here, the solution evaporates; the reducing agent is split, combining with steam to form ammonia. In the SCR catalytic converter, the ammonia (NH3) then reacts on a special coating with the nitrogen oxides (NOx) to form water and harmless nitrogen (N2) – the main constituent of the air we breathe.
In existing exhaust gas treatment systems, a close-coupled SCR catalyst is located between the turbocharger, the diesel oxidation catalytic converter – which converts uncombusted hydrocarbons – and the flexible connecting piece to the silencer pipe. The SCR coating is applied to the honeycomb structure of the diesel particulate filter, thereby enabling a single component to perform several functions. The close-coupled arrangement means that the exhaust gas temperatures required for high conversion rates can be achieved quickly after a cold start – the ideal range for conversion rates of more than 90 percent is between +220°C and +350°C. These conditions are met in many operating situations.
Conversion rates do not drop above +350°C – thanks to twin dosing-system. Temperatures at this level occur for example when driving at high speeds on the motorway, at high engine speeds over prolonged periods of time and when driving uphill, especially if the vehicle is fully loaded or towing a trailer.

What to watch out for
Fault reported with Autohold brake of November 2015 Volkswagen Passat 2.0 TDI Bluemotion estate bought as an ex-demo in May 2016. In last 2 weeks autohold has failed to release on over 25 occasions on one journey and on 8 occasions on another journey. The garage cannot identify the fault, despite it occurring twice in the dealership's car park with a mechanic in the car. We'd guess as a problem with the multifunction brake light switch that has separate switches for the brake lights, autohold and (if a DSG) to send a message to the ECU that the brakes are on.
28-04-2017:Report of significant emissions system faults from 2015 Passat TDI estate, bought in July 2016 slightly suspiciously from a big car supermarket at 10 months old with 5,000 miles for £18,000. Owner had it 2 weeks, emissions light came on - got it seen to under warranty. Light kept returning and car started to emit black exhaust smoke. VW has now had car back 10 times and owner has had a courtesy car for the last 11 weeks. Car with VW for a total of about 16 weeks. Still apparently no idea of cause.
01-10-2017:Report of leaking roof on 2017 Passat Estate with panoramic roof. Dealer says it needs a new roof under warranty.
14-08-2018:Report of DQ200 7-speed dry clutch DSG of 24k mile 2017 Passat 1.6 TDI Business Edition estate going into 'emergency mode'. It has had a fresh clutch pack, new Mechatronics and been reprogrammed but still fails, so the dealer is fitting a new transmission under warranty.
17-12-2018:Report of failure of rear brake discs of 2016 VW Passat B8 2.0TDI estate at 36,000 miles due to pads 90% worn and rear brake discs corroded. (This model Passat has an electromechanical parking brake with autohold brake hold function.)
