Toyota Aygo (2014 – 2022) Review

Toyota Aygo (2014 – 2022) At A Glance

3/5
Honest John Overall Rating
Easy to drive and easy to like, the Toyota Aygo is cheap to run but does come with some compromises, most notably a very small boot.

+Plenty of kit as standard. Quirky looks. Very reliable.

-Noisy engine. Interior feels cheap compared to a Volkswagen Up. Not much space.

Insurance Groups are between 1–9
On average it achieves 81% of the official MPG figure

The Toyota Aygo found plenty of favour with city car buyers, and rightly so as it offers a decent mix of low running costs, reliability and distinctive looks. There are compelling alternatives, though, including the Volkswagen Up, and Korean stablemates the Hyundai i10 and the stylish Kia Picanto. Read on for our full Toyota Aygo review.

Building on the success of the original Toyota Aygo, the second-generation car was once again a joint project with Citroen and Peugeot, who have their own versions in the shape of the Citroen C1 and the Peugeot 108.

However, this time around there was a lot more to differentiate the three, particularly in terms of looks.

The Toyota Aygo ditched the rounded look for a more angular and aggressive style, and in our opinion, it’s the most interesting of the trio.

There were lots of customisation options available with buyers able to choose different colours for the X on the front, rear bumper inserts and other exterior details.

It’s the same story inside with personalisation packs that provided gloss panels in various colours, giving it a youthful and funky feel.

The interior itself is more refined and comfortable than was the case in the first-generation Toyota Aygo, although it’s not as sophisticated as you’ll find in the Volkswagen Up.

Features like the dated trip display let it down somewhat. There’s a fair amount of hard plastic, too, but that doesn’t detract from the overall feeling of a well finished, durable interior.

This Toyota Aygo uses the same 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine as its predecessor, but with improvements to refinement and fuel consumption. It still has the same peppy nature, but is cheaper to run with official economy of 68.9mpg.

The model was updated in 2018 with extra sound insulation, but it’s hard to ignore the noise of the three-cylinder engine at higher speeds.

The car feels much more at home around town, with a tight turning circle and easy steering, although the short clutch travel takes a bit of getting used to. The gearchange is surprisingly precise for a car in this class.

While the Toyota Aygo doesn’t do anything revolutionary, it’s affordable to own as a used car and easy to live with. Of course, being a Toyota, a five-year warranty was standard from new, while fuel and insurance costs ought to be low.

Toyota Aygo (2014 – 2022) handling and engines

Driving Rating
The Toyota Aygo is an ideal city car thanks to its light steering and a willing engine, but higher speeds reveal the model’s shortcomings.

Toyota Aygo (2014 – 2022): Handling and ride quality

In town, the Toyota Aygo really comes into its own with a tight turning circle and effortless steering making potentially tricky manoeuvres easy.

But the clutch pedal’s short travel means it’s difficult to sympathetically find the biting point, leading you to give it a lot of revs and create unwanted noise.

The rear visibility is somewhat hampered by the rising door line and thick rear pillar, but that aside, the view out is good.

It rides well, too, given the short wheelbase and small overhangs. It is a touch bouncy, but not notably uncomfortable.

In terms of handling, the Toyota Aygo is nimble and reassuring, albeit not quite as sharp or as grippy as a Volkswagen Up. But it’s an improvement over the first-generation model thanks to a more rigid body structure and a more direct electric power-steering system.

The suspension, as with the engine, was carried over from the original Toyota Aygo, but a range of tweaks ensures cornering is more enjoyable, with less body roll.

Toyota Aygo (2014 – 2022): Engines

Unlike the closely related Citroen C1 and Peugeot 108, there’s just one engine in the Toyota Aygo range – the 1.0-litre VVT-i three-cylinder petrol unit.

It was carried over from the previous Toyota Aygo, and offers the same buzzy, characterful sound and nippy performance, despite a modest 72PS.

Refinement is better than on the original, helped by superior soundproofing (from 2018), although there’s still a lot of noise from the engine.

With peak torque of just 95Nm you do have to work the engine somewhat to get meaningful performance, but it’s happy to be revved hard when required.

It’s helped by a positive-shifting five-speed gearbox, while an automated manual – the x-shift – was available as an option.

Performance is aided by the car’s light weight. The Toyota Aygo is just 905kg at its heaviest, so while a 0-62mph time of 13.8 seconds isn’t much to write home about, the car feels nippy away from a standstill and only really struggles for pace on the motorway.

Toyota Aygo (2014 – 2022): Safety

When the Toyota Aygo was first tested by Euro NCAP in 2014, it scored four stars as the car used had the optional safety pack fitted.

In 2017, the Toyota Aygo was retested in standard form and scored a very mediocre three stars, as it had no automatic emergency braking or lane assist tech, unless you chose the top x-clusiv trim.

What you do get are six airbags, ABS, ESC traction control and two Isofix child seat mounts in the back seat. There’s also a tyre pressure monitoring system fitted.

Toyota Aygo (2014 – 2022): Towing

No figures have been published for the Toyota Aygo’s towing capacity, so it cannot pull any sort of trailer, which is not a surprise for a lightweight city car.

It’s easy for drivers to get comfortable in the Toyota Aygo, but it can’t match the Volkswagen Up for space in the back or boot capacity.

Toyota Aygo (2014 – 2022): Practicality

The Japanese company moved away from the back-to-basics approach of the original Toyota Aygo, giving this generation a more plush cabin.

There’s less exposed metal, improved space and better comfort, including wider and more supportive seats.

The driver’s seat comes with height adjustment as standard – apart from on base level x models – so although the steering column only adjusts for height and not reach, it’s easy to find a comfortable driving position, even if you’re tall.

The instrument cluster is simple, dominated by a large speedometer with a digital rev counter on the side. It’s all incorporated in the steering column and moves with it, so you can always see the display.

In the middle is a digital trip computer, but the display looks quite dated compared to rival cars. Similarly, the indicator and wiper column stalks feel a little old-fashioned.

The Toyota Aygo can’t match the Volkswagen Up for space in the back, while the boot is smaller too.

The maximum carrying capacity is 168 litres, and a spacesaver spare wheel is included. But the Volkswagen Up has 251 litres, and strangely, the Toyota Aygo’s close relation, the Citroen C1, offers much more at 196 litres.

Cabin storage is good, despite the narrow door pockets, with two cup-holders in front of the gear lever and a small cubby ahead of that.

Toyota Aygo (2014 – 2022): Quality and finish

The overall fit and finish of the interior is impressive and although there aren’t any soft plastics, the harder materials used on the doors and dash top do at least feel hard-wearing and durable, rather than cheap.

Toyota Aygo (2014 – 2022): Infotainment

A seven-inch infotainment touchscreen was included with most Toyota Aygo trims, with only the lowest x missing out altogether.

The screen is mounted in the upper middle of the dash and is easy to reach.

It’s also easy to operate and you can pair a smartphone using MirrorLink. However, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were only available as standard with the x-cite and x-clusive versions.

Toyota Aygo (2014 – 2022) value for money

Value for Money Rating
This generation of Toyota Aygo has an extremely good reputation for reliability, and low running costs add to the car’s appeal.

Toyota Aygo (2014 – 2022): Prices

A 60,000-mile Toyota Aygo x-play model from 2015 will cost from around £6500 and should provide years of sterling service, given the company’s reputation for reliability.

Go for something a bit newer, and a 2020 x-trend version with 30,000 miles on the clock will start at about £8800.

Toyota Aygo (2014 – 2022): Running Costs

The 1.0-litre petrol in the Toyota Aygo is the only engine available, and it delivers a combined claimed economy of 68.9mpg with the manual gearbox.

If you choose the x-shift auto, that dips slightly to 67.3mpg. Our Real MPG data shows the Toyota Aygo typically returns economy figures in the mid-50s, which is to be expected when most are used around town.

Carbon dioxide emissions of 93g/km for the manual and 95g/km for the auto mean cars registered prior to 1 April 2017 qualify for free road tax.

Those registered after this require the standard flat rate of £180 for 12 months of Vehicle Excise Duty.

Reliability is a big draw with the Toyota Aygo for used buyers, along with low servicing costs. Stick with a Toyota dealer for maintenance and the five-year warranty can be extended up to as much as 10 years and 100,000 miles.

Insurance premiums won’t be expensive, either, as the car sits in groups one to nine.

Model History

March 2014

New Aygo revealed

The new Aygo is designed to have a distinctive and characterful design with a wealth of customisation options. At the same time new Aygo builds on the qualities that made the original such a success throughout its lifetime, keeping the car compact, nimble and reliable, with genuinely low running costs. The latter are supported by revision to its award-winning three-cylinder 1.0-litre VVT-i petrol engine to secure class-leading fuel economy and emissions.

The overall length has increased by just 25mm to 3,455mm, which means it keeps the class-leading compactness of the previous model, and although front headroom has been increased by 7mm, vehicle height has actually been reduced by 5mm to 1,460mm, supporting the car’s aerodynamic efficiency. Both front and rear tracks have been widened by 8mm.

Although the wheelbase is unchanged at 2,340mm, the cabin is longer by 9mm, Wider armrests also improve comfort. There’s more room for luggage as well – an extra 29 litres – and loading is easier thanks to the space between the sill and rear seatback being made 5mm wider.

On the outside the X-shaped front grille, rear bumper insert, enhanced front bumper and alloy wheels can all be specified to suit, while in the cabin the instrument panel, centre console, air vents, shift knob and gear lever surround can easily be changed, even after years of ownership.

To make life simple, customers can also choose from a range of exterior and interior styling packs if they prefer, rather than selecting piece-by-piece customisation.

The new Aygo will be available with Toyota’s new x-touch multimedia system, operated using a fully integrated seven-inch touchscreen. It’s the first system in its segment to come with a rear view camera as standard.

The new Aygo features a comprehensively revised version of Toyota’s three-cylinder 1.0-litre engine. There’s more power and torque: 68bhp at 6,000rpm and 95Nm at 4,300rpm; 85Nm of torque is available from as low as 2,000rpm.

Combined cycle fuel consumption is reduced from 64.2mpg to 68.8mpg and bring CO2emissions down to 95g/km, below the 100g/km threshold for annual road tax (VED) exemption. The Aygo will be offered with a five-speed manual transmission or optional new x-shift, a much-improved automated manual transmission that can be used in fully automatic mode, or with manual gear selection using paddle shifts or the shift lever itself.

Aygo prices revealed

The new Aygo hit the road in the UK from 1 July 2014 with on-the-road prices from £8,595 – reduced to £7,995 with the benefit of a £600 customer saving offer. It will be launched in the UK in three and five-door bodystyles and three grades, x, x-play and x-pression, plus two special editions, x-cite and x-clusiv, offering customers exceptional choice. The colours ramp up new Aygo’s fun factor, with five options: White Flash, Silver Splash, Electro Grey, Deep Blue Buzz and Red Pop. In addition, the x-cite will be offered only in Orange Twist and the x-clusiv in Bold Black.

An optional x-nav pack (£395), unique to the new Aygo, can be linked to the multimedia system, using a dedicated storage pocket in the glovebox. This is activated using the Connect menu and gives driver access to fast and accurate pan-European route guidance.

Customisation packs are key to Aygo’s character and individuality. The OUTstand pack (£395) lets owners transform the exterior with three elements – the front X, A-pillar x-tension and rear bumper insert, in a choice of three colours. Yet more can be added with the OUTburst pack (£245), which comprises a front bumper decal, side sills and rear diffuser decal, available in red or chrome. The cabin can be transformed with the INspire pack (£165) with surrounds for the air vents and gear shift to match any exterior colour; other interior components have a piano black finish. The mood heightens further with INtense (£165), which introduces body colour-matched instrument panel, centre console and gear surround.

Owners can also have the double-bubble roof of their Aygo covered in a contrasting coloured decal (£195), and can ramp up the street style with option five-spoke alloys (£499) in silver, glossy black, machined glossy black and white. A twin-spoke alloy (£499) can also be specified in the same finishes, plus a customised centre cap in any of six body colours.

Aygo range updated with new features

The updated x-cite follows the theme set by the original x-cite model, replacing the vibrant Orange Twist paintwork with bright Cyan Splash. The blue metallic bodywork strikes a strong contrast with gloss black custom features, including 15-inch twin-spoke alloy wheels, door mirror casings, front X, front pillar extensions and rear bumper inserts. The theme is carried through to the cabin where the Cyan Blue shade is featured on the air vent surrounds and carpet mat edging. The seats are finished in dark grey with contrasting blue and light grey bolsters and the centre console and gear shift surround are gleaming gloss black.

For even more street-impact, customers can opt for the bi-tone version of x-cite, which adds metallic black painted roof and front and rear pillars, plus rear privacy glass for an additional £395. Looks are not the only attraction: x-cite is equipped with the x-touch multimedia system, including Bluetooth and DAB, and a reversing camera. Standard equipment also runs to air conditioning, power-adjustable heated door mirrors, driver’s seat height adjustment, split-folding rear seats, leather steering wheel and gear knob trim, front fog lights and LED daytime running lights, Safety provisions include six airbags ABS with emergency brake distribution, vehicle stability control and a tyre pressure warning system.

Three and five door versions are available, powered by Toyota’s three-cylinder 1.0-litre engine with manual or automatic x-shift transmission. Proving that something stylish can be affordable and practical too, both x-cite and x-pure deliver combined cycle fuel economy from 68.9mpg and CO 2 emissions from 95g/km – below the 100g/km threshold for annual VED (road tax).

The Aygo x-pure features white and silver are the colour co-ordinates. On the outside the White Flash paintwork is teamed with rear privacy glass, white-painted alloys and silver-finished bodywork elements. Inside, the standard grey seat fabric is accompanied by white and light grey bolsters. The centre console and gear shift surround follow the trend with a silver-white finish. The x-pure provides the same features and choices as the x-cite, apart from the bi-tone package.

The updated x-cite and x-pure were available to order from June 2017, with first deliveries to customers from June 2015 for x-cite and from August 2015 for x-pure and the bi-tone model. All are covered by Toyota’s five-year/100,000-mile new car warranty.

Toyota Safety Sense now available

Providing a laser-controlled Pre-Collision System that warns the driver of an imminent collision with a vehicle ahead (Forward Collision Warning) and readies Pre-Crash Brake Assist to deliver emergency braking as soon as the brake pedal is pressed. Should the driver fail to take action after the warning, the system will initiate Autonomous Emergency Braking to reduce speed by about 19mph, potentially bringing the car to a stop, to prevent a collision or reduce the force of impact. The Forward Collision Warning works at speeds between 10 and 86mph, when the relative speed between the Toyota and the car ahead is greater than 10mph. The Pre-Crash Brake Assist functions at speeds between 19 and 49mph, with relative vehicle speeds greater than 19mph. For Autonomous Emergency Braking, the speed range is from seven to 49mph. A Lane Departure Alert function is also included. This monitors lane markings on the road and helps prevent accidents and head-on collisions caused by a vehicle moving out of its lane. If the car starts to deviate from its lane without the turn indicators being used, the system alerts the driver with visual and audible warnings. Toyota Safety Sense is available now as an option on all Aygo models apart from x grade, price £375.
