Skoda Fabia (2007 – 2015) Review

Skoda Fabia (2007 – 2015) At A Glance

3/5

+Decently built and good value. Cheap to run. Greenline models are very economical with low CO2 emissions.

-Dull image. Smaller 1.2-litre petrol engine is lacklustre. Not exciting to drive.

Insurance Groups are between 3–15
On average it achieves 83% of the official MPG figure

Despite having been on sale since 2007 the Skoda Fabia is still a sensible used buy, thanks to a blend of value, practicality and a comfortable ride. It might be small in size but it’s cleverly packaged, making it a feasible choice as a family car – and one that is ideal for urban environments, thanks to low emissions, good fuel economy and easy parking.

That’s not to say it’s out of its depth on faster roads – Skoda offers a range of engines to suit all needs including a 105PS diesel and a 105PS 1.2-litre petrol, both of which are perfectly fine on motorways or twisting country lanes. Indeed the Fabia is a versatile car – it’s comfortable and easy to drive on most types of road.

The cabin is practical, with plenty of space in the back for adults, so children will be happy and because Skoda only offers the Fabia as a five-door, there’s no problem with rear seat access. The boot is usefully large and there’s a reasonable amount of technology on offer - buyers can get sat nav and Bluetooth as options. Unfortunately standard equipment isn’t brilliant and the cabin is starting to show its age, with a dated centre stack layout.

The 1.2-litre 105PS petrol engine is the pick of the range, offering the best blend of performance and running costs. There are cheaper petrol options with similar running costs, but they’re lacklustre in comparison and are best in urban-only use. The engine range also features four diesels ranging from a lethargic but economical 1.2-litre to a 105PS 1.6-litre that works well on the motorway.

It might be showing its age but the Fabia is still a good choice of small hatchback. All the ingredients are there – it’s decent to drive, cheap to run, practical and small enough to park. There are plenty of rivals that are just as good, though, so shopping around is important.

Skoda Fabia (2007 – 2015) handling and engines

Skoda offers a broad range of engines in the Fabia, from simple and cheap 60PS 1.2-litre and 86PS 1.4-litre petrols to a 105PS 1.6-litre diesel. Of the petrol engines on offer the best is the 1.2-litre TSI, available with 105PS or 86PS. Regardless of the power output chosen it blends useful performance with affordable running costs and it’s a decent performer on the motorway.

Those on a budget might choose the lower powered 60PS 1.2-litre engine but it’s best suited to urban driving, lacking the in-gear performance for quick overtaking and quiet long distance cruising. If cheap fuel and VED bills are top of the list of priorities there’s a 1.2-litre three-cylinder diesel in the Greenline II which provides official economy of 83.1mpg and CO2 of 89g/km.

It’s not the only diesel engine in the range though – those who spend a lot of time on the motorway or on A-roads will benefit from one of the 1.6-litre TDI engines offered in 105PS, 90PS and 75PS outputs. All have the same 109g/km emissions and 67.3mpg fuel economy, so picking between them is a question of budget and preference.

Regardless of the engine you choose you’ll get an easy-to-drive car with a comfortable suspension configuration and well-weighted steering. The Fabia rides well over rough surfaces and yet through corners it is fairly nimble and enjoyable, if not particularly exciting to drive. The pedals are light and progressive and the gearchange is reassuring and precise.

However, while the suspension does a decent job of ironing out lumps and bumps it does so quite loudly – thudding and bumping. In fact the Fabia isn’t the most refined car full-stop. Wind noise is noticeable at motorway speeds and the engine can be heard thrumming away. It’s not intrusively loud, but it could be better.

Additionally, while it’s a decent car to drive it’s not as fun as some rivals, notably the class-leading and best selling Ford Fiesta, which outdoes the Fabia several areas. Further to that the automatic option is a DSG dual-clutch system, which isn't without its problems. For most drivers the Fabia will be perfectly fine, though - it drives just like you'd hope a small car would.

The Fabia might not be very big – it’s both short and narrow – but it is very well packaged. Interior space is impressive – the back row offers enough head room for everyone and there’s enough leg room for adults unless there’s someone particularly tall sitting in the front. Children will be very comfortable indeed and parents will be happy because rear seat access is easy – Skoda only makes five-door Fabia models.

The boot is a useful size and shape and has some neat little touches, like a pair of hooks for keeping shopping bags upright and a couple of bottle holders, along with a strap for keeping things still through corners. It’s not perfect, though – the boot floor is low but there’s a big load lip, so getting heavy items in and out could be a pain. That problem is exacerbated by rear seats that don’t fold completely flat.

From the driver’s seat everything is sensibly placed and clearly laid out, but the centre stack is showing its age now. It’s made of good quality materials but the layout isn’t exactly cutting edge and while everything should prove to be durable, there’s nothing particularly plush or fanciful to entice you in. If you’re no-nonsense then the simplicity will appeal, though.

Standard equipment is okay, with auxiliary input for audio players and electric windows among the standard gear on S models – but to get air conditioning , alloy wheels and electric door mirrors you need to move up to SE trim. Top trim is Elegance but it’s still fairly well priced, and comes with climate control, larger alloy wheels and cruise control. Optional extras include an easy-to-use sat nav and Bluetooth.

New look grille from Geneva Motor Show, March 2010. New design accentuates the cars’ width, with a redesigned face that gives both cars a more dynamic look, increasing their road presence. Scout models have also been redesigned, with a new Fabia hatch version making its debut in Geneva.

Redesigned radiator grille and 3D-shaped headlamps, which have been widened, highlighting the stronger horizontal line of the cars’ faces. This gives both Fabia and Roomster a more dynamic look, while losing none of the cars’ elegance and appeal. Both vehicles now look more confident, mature and expressive.

The Fabia, Fabia Estate and Roomster also received a number of technological improvements including state-of-the-art engines. This new engine portfolio is at the very core of the changes, with the entire front structure being redesigned to accommodate them.

Skoda offered four petrol engines and two diesel units in the UK, with power ranging from 60bhp to 105bhp in the Fabia and from 70bhp to 105bhp in the Roomster. All engines comply with the EU5 standard and deliver exceptionally low fuel consumption and CO 2 emission levels.

The new chain cam 1.2 TSI 105bhp petrol engine is combined with the optimised DQ200 twin clutch seven-speed DSG transmission. Combined fuel consumption of 53.3 mpg. The four-cylinder 1.2 TSI engine was available in two power levels – 85 bhp and 105bhp. Both of these were also available with a five-speed manual transmission.

Both EA189 1.6 diesel engines are fitted with high-pressure Common Rail injection, with a pressure of up to 1,600 bar combined with fast-responding piezoelectric injectors that are able to perform as many as five injections within one beat, resulting in improved engine refinement. Both diesel engines feature particulate filters as standard and CO 2 emissions are under 110g/km.

The Fabia engine line-up consists of:

  • 1.2 6V 60 bhp
  • 1.2 12V 70 bhp
  • 1.2 TSI 85 bhp
  • 1.2 TSI 105bhp (manual and DSG)
  • 1.6 TDI CR DPF 90 bhp
  • 1.6 TDI CR DPF 105 bhp

Following the launch of the facelifted Fabia and Roomster, Skoda Auto unveiled the Fabia Estate GreenLine II and Roomster GreenLine II – the first of its second generation of environmentally-friendly GreenLine models.

The new model Fabia and Roomster’s were facelifted and fitted with new technology designed to further reduce fuel consumption and CO2emission levels. The most important innovations include a new engine (1.2 TDI CR DPF/75bhp DPF) with Common Rail (high-pressure direct injection), start-stop technology, energy recuperation and gear recommendation (on a Maxi DOT display).

One of the biggest technological changes in the second-generation GreenLine version is a new three-cylinder supercharged diesel engine (1.2 TDI CR DPF/55 kW) with a consumption of just 83.1 mpg and CO2emissions of 89 g/km for the Fabia Estate GreenLine II, and 67.3 and 109 g/km for the Roomster GreenLine II.

In addition to lower CO2emissions, other contaminant levels have also been reduced. The new 1.2TDI complies with EU5 emissions that, for diesel engines, has stricter regulations for nitrogen oxides and solid particles. The gear ratios of the car's five-speed transmission are identical to those of the ordinary Fabia and Roomster models fitted with the same engine. As a result, the GreenLine II offers the same responsiveness yet with lower consumption.

The stop-startsystem operates automatically, directly after the engine starts. If, after some time, the driver stops the car, engages neutral and releases the clutch pedal, the engine switches off automatically. As soon as the driver presses the clutch, the engine starts again immediately. stop-start makes it is possible to save up to 4.2mpg (combined) or up to 7.7 mpg in city traffic.

Energy recuperation is another technology introduced on the 2010 Fabia Estate i GreenLine II and Roomster GreenLine II. Effective utilisation of the vehicle's kinetic energy for battery recharging is a simple system that helps to save fuel continuously. The two systems – Start-Stop and Braking energy recovery work in partnership and, along with other measures, help to make the operation of these new models as environmentally-friendly as possible. The application of the energy recovery system has helped to reduce the CO 2 emissions by 2 - 4 g/km.

June 2010

Fabia Greenline II Estate price announced at £13,740 . The new Škoda Fabia Greenline II will become the most environmentally-friendly car ever to wear the famous Škoda badge which goes on sale on sale in the UK next week.

Second generation Greenline is powered by a new three-cylinder turbocharged 1.2 TDI CR 75bhp DPF common rail (high-pressure direct injection) engine which returns an impressive 83.1 mpg (combined cycle) and produces exceptionally lowemissions of only 89g/km, which means the Fabia Greenline II is exempt from road tax.

Priced at £13,740, the five door estate comes complete with £800 of extra standard equipment over the model which it replaces, including cruise control, ESP, stop-start function, tyre pressure monitor (TPM) and an alarm with tilt-sensor.

September 2010

Skoda Fabia Elegance 1.6 TDI CR also received an accolade at the awards, by being selected as the best in its price category – Under £16,000. The judges praised its “tenacious pulling power...and quick, accurate steering.”

What to watch out for

01-01-0001:

All apart from the 1.2 chain-cam three-cylinder engines and the later 1.2TSI 105 chain-cam four cylinder engines need new timing belts and tensioners every 4 years or 60,000 miles whichever comes first.

Fit and finish quality issues emerging: Dashboard vibrations against front windscreen, front electric windows glass vibrations, nearside front vibration from engine when starting and engaging in 1st gear at clutch biting point when ready to move forward and squeaky accelerator pedal.

Poor plastics, trim coming loose: front windows switches pop out of armrest socket along with wiring.

Main power cable can chafe, blowing 80amp fuse and often requiring a new wiring loom that can put the car off the road for 6 weeks while parts are obtained. This can result in loss of (electric) power assistance to the steering and, on diesels, loss of power assistance to the brakes.

ESP warning light can indicate Fault Code "Boost Pressure Sensor G201". This is embedded inside Teves Mk 60 ABS systems and requires replacement of ABS control unit/pump. Seems to be age-related, occurring mainly in 3 - 5 year old cars. Does not necessarily lead to an MoT failure. £1,500 cost of replacement.

Reports of very high early oil consumption of 1.2TSI 105.

11-11-2011:

Report of alloy wheels delaminating and causing airleaks.

14-01-2012:

More DPF problems reported with 1.6TDI used for repeated short runs from cold.

19-05-2012:

2011 Fabia Greenline II ECU failure problem and answer. After many visits to the dealer and about 3 replacement ECUs, the dealer found that there was a problem where the heater fan motor gave a voltage surge that damaged the ECU. The fan wiring was rerouted to a different fuse, and the ECU replaced again, and it's been fine now for 3 months.

08-08-2012:

Damp in luggage area usually due to a failed rear light cluster seal.

30-08-2012:

Complaint that slow reaction of 7 speed DSG on 1.2TSI 105 when exiting side roads actually caused a crash.

21-10-2012:

Hesitation of 2011MY 1.2TSI with 7-Speed DSG can sometimes be cured by a turbo shim modification and software update to cure the problem, but that Skoda only makes it it available if owners report, even if the car is on Skoda's database as being susceptible to the problem.

11-01-2013:

Warranty on DSG 7 speed dry clutch DQ200 gearbox extended to 5 years or 150,000 kilometres in Russia and China.

27-03-2013:

Epidemic of rear wiper motor failures seems to have spread from the Roomster and Octavia to the Fabia, coupled with a shortage of replacements.

06-04-2013:

By April 2013 readers were reporting that replacement rear wiper motors were coming through.

01-05-2013:

Seems that the problem with the rear wiper motors is the carbon brushes which are too tight in their holders. It is just a DIY job requiring a nailfile and pins. Carefully remove the brushes and slightly file down the edges so that when placed back in the holder (using pins to hold brushes in place) they move easily within the holder. When satisfied remove the pins and replace wiper motor. If successful it is far cheaper than a new wiper motor.

26-05-2013:

Failure of Exhast Gas Recirculation Valve reported every 15k - 20k miles on 35k mile Fabia TDI.

29-06-2013:

Report of clutch failure on 18 month old Fabia costing £830 to rectify. (Clutch failure reported on 11k mile two year old Octavia and elderly driver quoted £800 to replace it 4 days later.)

16-07-2013:

Owner claims his 2007 Fabia has been plagued with electronic faults over the years: Accelerator module replacement, Camshaft sensor replacement, Airbag warning light module reset,a nd a managment fault traced to a reverse light switch. Now the EPC warning light comes on but turning off and restarting the car seems cure this.

19-12-2013:

17" 'Trinity' alloy wheels with 205/40 R17 tyres seem to be causing problems with Fabia Monte Carlo models, exaggerating the car's natural tendency to pull to the left. Adding extra pressure to the front n/s tyre can help to counteract this.

21-03-2014:

Yet another complaint about the ridiculously 'bling' 205/40 ZR17 tyres fitted to Fabias in 'Monte Carlo' spec. But it seems that the tendency to pull to the left was caused by Dunlop ZR17s and is cured by fitting Pirelli ZR17s.

26-04-2014:

2010 Skoda Fabia 1.6TDI needed new EGR because EGR became clogged.

21-05-2014:

Repeated failure of emissions system of Skoda Fabia 1.2TDI purchased March 2013 resulting in limp home mode, which is extremely limp in a 1.2TDI. Repeated attempts by the dealer have failed to cure it.

18-12-2014:

Another case of the awful VAG 1.4 16v engine reared its ugly cylinder head in a 30,000 mile 2007 Fabia. The car wasn't idling properly. Skoda dealer charged £120 for an hour's work and suggested it needed 2 - 3 days invetigative work. Car returned worse than it went in. Poor idling and no power. Went back into dealer who found a short on the ignition and replaced the spark plugs for £240. New injectors had not helped either. Final diagnosis: build up of carbon on the valves, estimate £400 to clean up with no guarantessit would solve the problem. More on this proble in VW Polo IV 2005-2009

08-03-2015:

4 year old Skoda Fabia 1.6TDI needed a new EGR cooler at 40,000 miles. Skoda paid 80%.

07-07-2015:

Timing chain failure reported on 2011 Skoda Fabia 1.2TSI 105 at 45,000 miles. New engine required.

28-07-2015:

Notified of new engine required for 25,000 mile 2009 Skoda Fabia 1.2 MPI 3-cylinder that had been sercviced on time every year. Cost was a reasonable £2,500.

18-01-2016:

Lot of problems led to p/x of 2010 Fabia 1600 diesel Elegance for a new 1.2TSI. Fabia TDI was issuing constant DPF related warning lights at 53,000 miles due to being relegated to shorter runs. Worse after a cam-belt change in June 2015. Waterpump changed at the the same time, and leaving the engine running to purge the cooling system of air did not do the EGR valve, etc. any favours. After that, as well as normal DPF warning light coming on, which always went after an "Italian Tune", owner kept getting flashing glow-plug coils warning ( = engine management fault) which had never happened before, and "Workshop Now!" in the MFD, which kept coming on then going off again.

10-03-2016:

DSG became rough on 2013 Fabia 1.2TSI just inside warranty. Clutch pack replaced. Gearchanges still rough. Whole transmission replaced. Owner asked to pay 60% of the labour charge.

05-04-2016:

Report of EGR of 2011 Skoda Fabia 1.6TDI with the EA189 engine failing at 54,900 miles. Skoda dealer quoted a fortune to replace it and claimed no knowledge of the free £200 EGRs trhat VW has been supplying to its dealers.

29-05-2016:

Skoda Fabia 1.6TDI needed new EGR at 80k miles. Quotesd £300 + £300 to fit by Skoda dealer.

30-07-2016:

Report of timing chain of 2011 Fabia 1.4TSI jumping at 45k miles. Skoda dealer quoted £3,300 for a new engine. Reader had it repaired by a local mechanic for £1,000.

03-08-2016:

Report of waterpump of 2013 Skoda Fabia 1.6TDI starting to leak, 4 months out of warranty, and Skoda dealer ludicrously asking £90 to pay for 'diagnostics' before any chance of goodwill towards cost of replacement.

02-08-2017:

Reassuring letter sent to owners of EA189 engined Skodas who have had the NOx emissions fix: “if a customer makes a complaint to an Authorised Repairer or to the Volkswagen Group in respect of a failure of the EGR, fuel injection system or emissions after treatment system within 24 months following the date of the implementation of the technical measures, in respect of a vehicle with mileage not exceeding 160,000 miles, SKODA will consider the complaint very carefully and if such complaint was established to have arisen as a result of the implementation of the technical measures, then Skoda will act responsibly and swiftly, in line with its goodwill policy, as supplemented in the annex, to respond to the consumers’ reasonable concerns.”

23-10-2017:

Strange report of EGR of 2011 Skoda Fabia "1.9TDI 105" estate failing at 52,000 miles, but reader mentions not taking it for the NOx emissions fix yet. So must have been a 1.6TDI 105.

19-11-2017:

Owner of 36,000 mile 2011 Skoda Fabia 1.2 told by dealer he bought it from new that it needs a new engine costung £7,000 due to a timing chain issue, despite having been serviced every year by the same dealer. Reason likely to be that VAG cut the price it was prepared to pay for timing chains to the chain manufacturer who in turn was forced to extend the life of his link stamping tools. Links stamped out late in the life of the tools could have scratches and burrs on them that eventually lead to failure of the chain.

21-02-2018:

Report of timing cjain of 2011 Skoda Fabia 1.2TSI failing at 44,000 miles while still under original 3 year warranty. Now, at 53,000 miles, despite having had the DQ200 transmission fluid change under the service action, the Mechatronics have failed. This was coverted under the extended warranty byt the dealer snapped a bolt and that means it needs a new DQ200 DSG at a cost of £4,000. Warranty will only cover £1,500 for replacement Mechatronics.

02-03-2018:

Stretched timing chain reported on 2010 Skoda Fabia 1.2.

05-04-2018:

No official word from VAG, but ECU testing believes that the DQ200 7-speed dry cutch Mechatronics control box was finally re-engineered in 2016. This DSG 7 control unit is a common failure with engines under 2.0 litres on the Skoda Fabia (2010 - 2013)

14-08-2018:

Report of 2012 Skoda Fabia 1.2TSI 105 wrongly being called in by the dealer for a timing belt change at 25,000 miles. The 105 is a chain cam engine. The 1.2TSI 110 is belt.

01-10-2018:

Report of timing chain failure of 1.2TSI engine of 2011 Skoda Fabia at 29,000 miles, destroying engine.

07-12-2018:

Report of EPC light, Electronic Stability Control/Traction Control light and Exhaust inspection system light suddenly coming on in a 2012/62 Skoda Fabia 1.2 TSI, and the car started to shudder. Skoda dealer is charging £60 to inspect it and the latest news is that the next cost will be £120 for a software update.

13-01-2019:

Report of EPC light coming on in Skoda Fabia 1.2TSI alerting to a stop/start error and exhaust emissions light also coming on at irregular intervals. Garage applied 'diagnostics' and foud no faults. Apparently re-set ECU. Two days later, lights on again.

23-01-2019:

Report of failed rear dampers in Skoda Fabia 2013 1.2TSI estate at 26k miles. Covered by an extended warranty in this case but apparent shortage of replacement dampers.

26-01-2019:

Report of engine problems with a 2012 Skoda Fabia Estate 1,198cc petrol engine with 51,000 miles. Driven 7,000 miles a year, mostly short urban journeys of around 8 miles, but every other week it gets a round trip of 80 miles on the motorway. Run on ordinary unleaded. Engine warning light has appeared intermittently, usually after being stuck in start-stop traffic or after a long run on very hot day. The light stays on for about a day then disappears. Also sometimes a short-lived loss of power. Maybe dirty injectors and superunleaded would help. Maybe a stretched timing chain.

31-03-2019:

Report of clutch failure in Skoda Fabia 1.2TSI 90 at 29,000 miles. No age given.

10-04-2019:

Report of 2012 Skoda Fabia "automatic" (DQ200 7-speed dry clutch DSG) failing to engage reverse at 55,000 miles. Skoda dealer simply quoted £5,000 for a new transmission. Happily, Bristol Transmissions fixed it with a new Mechatronics unit.

24-04-2019:

Report of failure of DQ200 7-speed dry clutch DSG failing on 2012 Skoda Fabia at 51,000 miles. Owner quoted £4,800 for a replacement transmission.

Report of noises from DQ200 7-speed dry clutch DSG in 2012 Skoda Fabia 1.2TSI together with engine symbol on dash.

22-8-2019: Report of EGR of 2013 Skoda Fabia diesel failing. Owner had the NOx emissions fix after the glowplug light stayed on (indicating an EGR fault), so dealer is contending that the fault pre-existed the NOx fix so the "Rebuilding Trust" commitment does not apply and the owner must pay £1,200 to replace the EGR. 2-10-2019: report of timing chain failing in 2013/63 Skoda Fabia at 50,000 miles. Engine self-destructed.
