  • Dirty old `soot ball juggling` diesel? - at 6.5yrs 16 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Changed oil at 3,000 interval (total 50,000) - its quieter warming up on the drive at -1C this morning. This is the old 1.9D, indirect injection diesel - which seems to constantly juggle large balls of soot - letting one fall on its head every seven seconds or so. Yes, its desperately dirty, when

  • Maintenance 309 (short run) 20 May 2002 (Forum)
I do up to 500 miles per week. The car is a Peugeot 309 1.4i, 1993. Manual says oil change every 6000 and a service every 12000. Half these for hard use, which includes 'frequent short journeys from cold, or door to door use.' My mileage is from the following: -College, 10 miles away on back roads
  • Tiguan - VW 1.4 TSI 160 - which oil 26 Jan 2016 (Forum)
    - approx 1100 miles ago) used "Bulktank Shell Helix". Ran a search at Millersoils (below) but not sure what these mean.  Understand this is a senstive engine and needs the right oil and wondered if the different oil had any impact, or am I clutching at straws?   Thanks
  • Changing to Synthetic 21 Mar 2008 (Forum)
I now do quite a lot of short journeys, and I've heard that fully-syntehtic oil is better for this as it has a lower viscosity when cold so circulates better and much more quickly at start-up, thus reducing wear. My car is a 1994 Toyota Corolla, with 1.6 16v EFI engine. I notice the Halfords
  • Golf2 GTi - Semi-synth/High milage? 7 Aug 2004 (Forum)
with some of that stuff. Now I have been to the website: http://www.chris-longhurst.com/carbibles/index.html?menu.html&engineoil_bible.html it tells me that you should never go to mineral oil when your car has been used to semi synth and vice versa. So the dilema is; what do i do when the next oil change

I have just purchased a 4 year old fiesta 1.4 petrol with only 11k on the clock. I have done an oil and filter change and filled up with good quality fuel. Can anyone reccomend any fuel or oil additives or should i just give it a good run on the motorway?
  • Finished the years DIY yet? bad weather `e come 1 Sep 2009 (Forum)
Well, I`ve serviced both of ours on the drive earlier this month. Done the door lock, oil leak and EGR. Hopefully that`s it and they will be OK now until a warm day in March/April for the next oil changes. How about you?
  • Renault Scenic (2003 - 2009) - 04 1.9 - Turbo whistle. 23 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Is it normal for a turbo to whistle more in the colder weather? I have noticed it's definitely noisier recently, like a feint camping kettle sort of noise. The oil level is correct and within the 18000 mile oil change interval.

engine, the 130BHP requires 5W/40 oil to standard VW 505 01 - note the '01' and not '00'! Is this standard of oil significantly different? Can I just keep on using the stuff I've got and hope that it is just lubricating enough until the next oil change 6 months later? Any Oil boggins out there? Chi
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 1999 1.8 Oil consumption question 29 Jan 2009 (Forum)
I have a T reg Ford Focus 1.8 petrol which has done 78k miles. I have worked out that since the last oil change which was last November, the engine has consumed about 500ml (0.5 quart/litre) of oil whilst covering about 1000 miles. Is this rate of oil consumption normal and also presumably all car

  • Primera P12 2.0 Petrol (2003) - Oil choice for Primera P12 2.0 Petrol (2003)? 18 Jul 2013 (Forum)
I have to change the oil on a recently aquired P12 2.0l petrol. The manual specifies almost every combination of 0W20, 0W30, 5W30, 10W40, 20W50 you can think of. However, there is no mention of 5W40. I have a lot of quality 5W40 oil available from a previous vehicle and wondered
  • Renault Megane III 1.9dci - Access to oil filter 21 Jan 2012 (Forum)
resistance after a few cm, does this mean a sump plug only job?  I wiyuld like to do the job myself ( using genuine Renault filter and Elf oil ) as I feel 18k is to long to let this motor go in between changes.
  • Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - (04-07) 1.8 petrol - oil filter & sump plug access 22 Jan 2008 (Forum)
couple of quick questions - on the 1.8 petrol is it possible to access the oil filter element to change it, and the sump drain plug to drain it WITHOUT dropping off the undershield that exists under the engine? Cos the shield is hard to drop off if your doing it in the drive outside your house
