  • Alfa Romeo - 2002 2.4 engine braking 5 Feb 2009 (Forum)
A pal of mine has a 52 reg manual JTD Alfa and he tells me that his car has no engine braking. His dad has a Fiat with a JTD engine and when he bought it he apparantly commented about the lack of engine braking. We were talking about this and I suggested that these cars might have a freewheel
  • Volkswagen Passat (1997 - 2000) - 98 1.9tdi front brake pads replacement 20 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Hello, I was going to replace my front brake pads but while reading a DIY guide on VW Vortex it mentioned a special tool that you need to push back the caliper and twist it at the same time. I was going to use a G-clamp but this would only push the caliper back ..i.e not do the twisting
  • Squeaky brakes - Ford Focus 21 Oct 2006 (Forum)
To be perfectly blunt, they're doing my head in. Whenever I brake when I'm going slowish or coming to a stop, the brakes squeak very loud. Normally they'd do this and then stop after a while but they're doing it all the time and I wince every time it happens. I'm 99% certain it's coming from
  • W Micra - Brake Noise 15 Jan 2006 (Forum)
I have a year 2000 Micra 1L, last year I had the brake pads replaced, the discs were ok at that time. I have a grinding sort of noise, not squealing, coming from the passenger side wheel when I apply the brakes, it sounds a bit like when the pads were worn down. I have done less than 2000 miles
  • Damn Galaxy problems again! BRAKES! 1 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Hi there, I have a 2004 reg Ford galaxy TDi PD 130, two weeks ago it had its 40,000 mile service. I was driving it the other day, and i had to apply the brakes full on. As soon as i did this, the car beeped thre times at me and the brake system warning light started flashing, then went out after
  • Omega suspension braking problem 29 Dec 2004 (Forum)
I am at my wits end here. My 95 Omega V6 estate has an odd problem in that it slowly wanders to the right when braking gently, holding the wheel still. If you do it not holding the wheel the wheel steers slightly left and the car pulls up straight. Even stranger when you brake really hard
  • Vectra spongy brakes 17 Dec 2004 (Forum)
Hi, I have a new shape vectra, coming up to 2 years old with 45k. Both front and rear pads have been changed and now the brakes are very spongy with excess pedal travel. If the pedal is pumped the travel decreases and bites nearer the top of the pedal movement. Its as if there is air in the system
  • Dirty wheels = brakes working better? 26 May 2004 (Forum)
Afternoon! Spent way too long at the jet wash yesterday (and burnt my arm, but that's another story) getting the brake dust off my alloys. As Polo needs new brake pads anyway, I toddled along to Halfords to see if they had any of the Green Stuff ones I've read about that don't make your wheels
  • 106 rear brakes 21 May 2004 (Forum)
Had anyone come across the rear wheel locking up on a 1994 106 XT petrol. ( not both wheels, just the passenger side rear wheel). Some issue with the brake cable or shoes...I am wondering if the shoe(s) is worn out and is out of place or something or that the insides could just need lubricating
  • A3 Quattro recall (new shape) 15 Apr 2004 (Forum)
Just got a recall notice for the A3 today. Might be worth adding to the car-by-car breakdown. I saw the original one "29-9-2003: On 21,694 cars shatter cracks may occur on vacuum pipe to brake servo, leading to loss of servo assistance to brakes." But as my car is 04 I'm assuming this was done
  • BMW brake pads 11 Aug 2003 (Forum)
I have a 3.5 year old BMW 520 which needs new brake pads. The main dealer quotes 118 pounds to fit these, whereas a local garage quotes 45 pounds to fit non-BMW pads (Ferodo), or they can fit BMW pads for more if I want. Is worth paying the extra to have pads fitted by the dealer? -rumour has
  • Mitsubishi Brakes 6 May 2003 (Forum)
Mother-in-law has 02 reg Space Wagon, bought ex-demo from main agent in January, about 6,000 miles on the clock. Braking from speed now produces noticeable vibration. I drove it last weekend: she doesn't normally drive in a manner to notice this, I got it to do it twice. Yesterday she
  • Broken brake lights 7 Jan 2003 (Forum)
One of the things that gets me more worked up than it should are vehicles that have no brake lights that do not work. Whilst I know that a car should be pulled over for being unroadworthy, there seem to be a huge number of vehicles out there which don't. I used to point this out to the drivers
  • ABS problems with Toyota Yaris Verso 28 Sep 2013 (Ask HJ)

  • Does my two-year-old Ford Fiesta really need its brake fluid replacing? 21 May 2011 (Ask HJ)
When we bought my Fiesta two years ago we paid upfront for servicing. It is about to have its second service and my local Ford garage tells me that it...
  • Pitted wheels 18 Apr 2011 (Ask HJ)

  • Citroen Xsara (1997 - 2004) - 99 1.9 Obscure electrical gremlin when braking - 1 9 May 2009 (Forum)
Bit of history on the car: driven into flood water earlier this year and sucked water up the air intake. Engine replaced (1.9TD XUD) and all seemed well. Two weeks ago the front brake pads were replaced and the rear drums cleaned. We still need to reconnect the rev counter and speedo cables
  • Braking after blow out...Fiesta 7 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Hi All First post here, so please be kind. I had a v.scary blow out today, just as I was turning left off a v.busy road, then the brakes gave up, couldn't make the turn (it was sharp) so had to get back onto the main road going over one of those island thingies in the process. Nearly scared me
