The Renault Megane typically lives in the shadow of cars like the Volkswagen Golf or Ford Focus – but the Sport Tourer estate, which was revised in 2014, is worth a look if you're after a practical yet compact load lugger. It’s spacious, solidly built and good to drive too. It may not feel quite as sophisticated as a Golf Estate, but it has plenty of appeal as a stylish estate.
Rear load space is impressive at 524 litres. That’s behind the class-leading 660 litres of a Peugeot 308SW, but it doesn’t really feel like you’re losing much in reality, thanks to a wide opening and a low load deck. Folding the seats expands space to 1600 litres, however, they don’t fold completely flat - an oversight that means the Megane isn’t as versatile as some of the competition.
On the plus side there is a good amount of space in the back row. The choice of materials in the cabin is good, with a mixture of soft-touch and harder, good quality, durable plastics. However the layout is drab and the infotainment system is fiddly and confusing to use.
The Megane Sport Tourer is easy to drive, with a comfortable suspension set up and light, accurate steering. Despite the comfort-oriented suspension there isn’t much body roll through bends, so the Megane suits B-roads just as well as town or motorway driving, both of which are made more pleasant by impressive soundproofing and refinement.
The engine range kicks off with an older, lacklustre 1.6-litre petrol that is best avoided, but the TCe petrol engine and dCi diesels are capable performers, with the added benefit of reasonable fuel economy. Renault also offers a 220PS petrol in the GT for those who want swift performance.
There’s no denying that the estate versions of the Volkswagen Golf or Peugeot 308 are better all-round cars than the Megane Sport Tourer, but it still makes for comfortable, practical and easy-to-drive family transport. If you can get a good deal then it’s certainly worth adding to your shortlist.

The Megane Sport Tourer range kicks off with a 1.6-litre petrol engine with 110PS. It’s an old-fashioned unit marred by high emissions of 159g/km. A better choice for those who want petrol power is the 115PS Energy TCe petrol, which offers better performance despite being a 1.2-litre, along with respectable emissions of 119g/km and official economy of 53.3mpg.
Renault also offers a 1.5-litre diesel with 110PS and a 1.6-litre diesel with 130PS, the latter of which is the best engine in the range, offering impressive performance thanks to healthy peak torque of 320Nm. It feels at home in most environments and works well as a motorway cruiser thanks to good refinement - it's quiet and comfortable enough to eat up long distances with ease. Official economy for the 130PS engine is impressive at 70.6mpg, with emissions of just 104g/km.
The GT 220 model is only offered with a 220PS petrol engine - the same engine as used in the Renaultsport Megane, but power is down on the hot hatch and so is performance – so it’s hard to recommend, especially when you consider its emissions of 169g/km. It also gets a more performance focussed suspension set up to give more agile handling with less body roll - but also less comfort.
The rest of the Megane Sport Tourer models are easy to drive thanks to a softer, more comfortable suspension set-up and well-weighted controls. The steering is smooth, light and accurate, while the gear change is crisp and precise. The Sport Tourer is more at home on a long cruise than on a tight country road – but even on more challenging roads there is plenty of grip so it's safe and predictable.
It might be easy to drive and comfortable, but it isn’t quite as good as the SEAT Leon ST or Volkswagen Golf Estate – both feel more accurate, more responsive and have better ride quality through bends and over bumps. That said, the Megane Tourer hardly lags a mile behind – it’s just not quite as polished as its rivals.

The most important part of an estate car is the boot – and in that regard the Megane Sport Tourer is good, if not as good as class-leaders. With the rear seats in place capacity is 524 litres, which is shy of the Volkswagen Golf Estate’s 605 litres and the Peugeot 308 SW at 660 litres, but it doesn’t feel much smaller thanks to a nice wide opening and a low, flat load lip.
Unfortunately the Megane Sport Tourer isn't as good as it could be with its rear seats folded down – they don’t fold flat, which means the load area isn’t as versatile as that of many rivals. For bulky, weighty items a flat load deck is more or less essential, so it’s a problem worth bearing in mind. On the plus side you can specify a folding front passenger seat for loading extra long objects.
The rest of the cabin is better. There’s plenty of room in both the front and rear row for adults and the materials used feel strong and durable. There’s a mixture of harder plastics low down and soft-touch materials higher up, both of which feel tough and capable of withstanding kicking children’s feet or scratching dogs' paws.
The layout of the dashboard is uncluttered and neat but there are a few problems, notably with the infotainment system. It’s a TomTom device and is controlled by a joystick and buttons on the centre-console. It’s tricky to get to grips with and it bongs, beeps and flashes for almost every circumstance, which gets tiresome quite quickly.
The rest of the equipment is generous enough – every model gets air conditioning, cruise control, electric windows, alloy wheels, six air bags, push button start and USB-connectivity. Upper trim levels gain the aforementioned navigation system, plus luxuries including dual-zone climate control, auto lights and auto wipers.
Expression+ models come with 16-inch alloy wheels, tinted rear windows, front fog lights, LED running lights, heated and electrically adjustable door mirrors, cruise control, USB-in, air conditioning, push-button start and electric front windows.
Dyanmique TomTom trim adds automatic lights, auto wipers, dual zone climate control, keyless entry and start, TomTom built in navigation system, plus a folding front passenger seat and a load net.
GT Line TomTom trim adds 17-inch alloy wheels, extra tinted rear windows, electrically folding door mirrors, black headlight surrounds, GT Line styling kit, two-tone seat cloth, aluminium pedal caps, Renaultsport steering wheel, rear parking sensors and an improved audio system.
GT220 trim adds 18-inch alloy wheels and a Renaultsport chassis.

Megane Sport Tourer launched
Range comprises 21 versions across four trim levels: Expression, Dynamique, TomTom Edition and Privilège, priced from £15,485 to £22,785. High standard equipment levels include: 4x15W RDS radio CD, air conditioning, front and rear curtain airbags, electric front and rear windows, ESP and longitudinal roof bars.
Options include 17” alloy wheels, Arkamys 3D Sound audio system with Bluetooth and multi-functional TunePoint (for portable music players and USB keys), Carminat TomTom®, electric panoramic sunroof, leather upholstery and bi-xenon headlights. Nine engines at launch (four petrol and five diesel), ranging from 86hp to 180hp
Both versions of the 1.5 dCi engine (86 and 106hp) emit 120 grams per kilometre or less in the estate version of Renault’s best-selling model. The 1.5 dCi 86 Expression produces only 118 grams. Versions with the 1.9 dCi 130 are also eligible. Two eco² models feature in each trim level, giving a total of eight affordable and low emission choices across the range.
The range starts with Expression, at £15,485. Key features on this entry-level version include 4x15W RDS radio CD, air conditioning, front and rear curtain airbags, ESP, folding front passenger seat, front and rear electric windows, keyless car with Renault card and longitudinal roof bars.
Higher up the range, Dynamique boasts core equipment such as 16” alloys wheels, automatic lights and wipers, Bluetooth and MP3 connection, Hands free Renault card and leather steering wheel. Like New Clio and Scénic, a new TomTom Edition appears in the New Mégane Sport Tourer line-up. Based on Dynamique, it offers Carminat TomTom for an additional £360, rather than the £450 cost of it as an option.
Completing the range, flagship Privilège trim provides luxurious family motoring, adding Dual-Zone climate control, electric folding mirrors, electrochrome rear view mirror and rear armrest with storage. To enhance the already svelte lines of the latest addition to the New Mégane range, a Style Pack is available on Expression versions at £380, offering 16” Spirale alloy wheels and front fog lights.

Megane GT and GT Line unveiled
GT Line is an option pack available on Mégane Dynamique versions. They feature a specific chassis and are powered by the Mégane’s core-range of economical and ecological engines. GT is available with the 2.0 TCe 180 and 2.0 dCi 160 powerplants and combines sporty exterior and interior details with a specially-tuned chassis which takes its inspiration from Mégane Renaultsport 250

2012 Megane range benefits from Renault’s latest three new downsized engines, 1.2 TCe 115, 1.5 dCi 110 Stop & Start and 1.6 dCi 130 Stop & Start, all with impressive fuel economy and emissions figures, not to the detriment of performance and responsiveness. The dCi 110 110hp Stop & Start’ emits class-leading 90g/km of CO2 and 80.7 mpg on the combined cycle.
The Megane 2012 line-up consists of Expression+, Dynamique TomTom and GT Line TomTom. The entry-level gains 16” alloy wheels, upgraded radio with USB connectivity and Bluetooth™ and leather steering wheel, plus cruise control. Dynamique TomTom adds LEDs, plus 17” alloy wheels as a no-cost option, while the halo model GT Line TomTom features Arkamys 3D Sound audio system, auto parking brake and rear parking camera with rear parking sensors.

Knight Edition comes with a 1.6 16V petrol or low emission dCi 110 Stop & Start diesel engine. Special release available as Hatch, Coupé and Sport Tourer. 'Limited' edition Megane launched
Gets a panoramic sunroof, extra tinted windows and tailgate. Around £1,000 worth of extra equipment, for half the £500 extra price, when compared to the already well-equipped Dynamique TomTom varieties on which it is based.
Equipment included rear parking sensors, special upholstery, badging and kickplates, and electrically operated and folding door mirrors in gloss black. There is a choice of three petrol and two diesel engines, 1.6 VVT 110, 1.2 ENERGY TCe 115 and ENERGY TCe 130 (Scenic only), or the dCi 110 and ENERGY 1.6 dCi 130.

Renault Megane 220GT Sport Tourer announced, along with 220GT versions of the 5-door hatch and 3-door coupe.
Based on the Megane GT Line TomTom, they are powered by a 220hp version of the Renaultsport 2.0-litre turbo engine and featuring a Renaultsport-engineered chassis and 18-inch ‘Serdard’ alloy wheels fitted with 225/40R18 Dunlop Sport Maxx TT tyre plus stiffer springs and dampers and larger front brake discs from Renaultsport.
The 2.0-litre 16-valve turbocharged engine develops its 220hp at 4,750 rpm and drives the front wheels through a six-speed manual transmission. With 340Nm torque at 2,400 rpm at the driver’s disposal, the GT 220 can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 7.3 seconds on the way to a top speed of 149 mph. Yet with Renault’s Stop & Start technology as standard, the GT 220 is also economical and efficient, returning 38.7 mpg on the combined test cycle, with CO 2 emissions of 169 g/km. (All these figures are worse than the 280PS SEAT Leaon ST Cupra.)
The Renaultsport-tuned chassis on the GT 220 includes specific front and rear dampers that use the calibration and valving based on those used on Mégane Renaultsport and the same rear bump stops. The steering calibration differs to that of the mainstream Mégane to take into account the GT 220 versions' specific tyres and chassis settings.
Braking performance is provided by ventilated 320 mm front discs (up from 280 mm on GT Line) and 260 mm solid rear brake discs together with firmer, more progressive servo-assistance thanks to the fitment of the Mégane Renaultsport’s master cylinder.The GT 220 also features Renault’s Anti-Skid Regulation (ASR) and Understeer Logic Control (UCL) advanced driver aid systems, plus ABS anti-lock brakes with EBD emergency brake assist.
Appearance, specification and colour choices for the GT 220 mirror what is available with the GT Line models, including the option of bespoke Malta Blue paintwork with anthracite grey and polished detailing. The door mirror housings are in dark chrome shell. At the front there is a special GT bumper design, with a reshaped central air intake and an integral gloss black cross bar that carries the number plate. At the rear, the bumper has a lower section finished in body colour, which incorporates an anthracite-coloured aerodynamic diffuser. In the cabin the Renaultsport influence is evident in the sports seats and upholstery, the thick leather-rimmed steering wheel with thumb indents and stitching detail, the analogue dials and aluminium pedals. The interior door handle pulls, outer air vent surrounds and the dashboard have a polished carbon finish.
Standard equipment includes dual-zone climate control, cruise control, speed limiter, automatic headlights and windscreen wipers, LED daytime running lights, fully integrated Renault R-Link satellite navigation, Bluetooth, a USB connection, a rear parking camera and an uprated Arkamys 3D sound system.
The options list offers scope for personalisation, including the advanced Visio System by Renault (lane departure warning and automatic main/dipped beam headlights operation) and the Leather Pack of carbon grey heated leather seats.
The GT 220, like every Renault, provides the peace of mind of the 4+ warranty and assistance package. The car is protected with a four year or 100,000 miles warranty (first two years unlimited mileage). In the event of a breakdown, Renault provides emergency roadside repairs or towing to the nearest dealer 24/7 every day of the year, plus three years’ European cover. There is also a three-year paint warranty and 12 years’ cover against corrosion.

What to watch out for
Report of 1.6 dCi 130 (in a Qashqai 4WD) failing due to a blown injector causing the lubrication on cylinder No 1 to wash away and wreck the engine.
15-10-2015:Report of high oil consumption of 1,800 miles per litre of 2012 Renault Megane 1.2TCe Sport Tourer. Engine failed at 63k miles and, after 2 months off the road, engine was replaced under warranty.
