Renault Clio (2013 – 2019) Review

Renault Clio (2013 – 2019) At A Glance

4/5

+Bigger and better looking Clio an improvement on previous model, both 90 TCe petrol and 90 dCi diesel under 100g/km CO2.

-Interior quality doesn't match rivals, UK cars have offset pedals and wheel, steering on 90 TCe a little light.

Insurance Groups are between 4–15
On average it achieves 73% of the official MPG figure

Renault has been producing the Clio small hatch to the same successful formula for decades now and the fourth-generation version launched in 2013 was a brilliant refresh of the ingredients. More cabin space and better quality made it a stronger rival for the likes of the MINI and Volkswagen Polo, while efficient engines made it cost-effective to buy and run. While not as pin-sharp to drive as a Ford Fiesta, the Clio was still a lot of fun and there was also a choice of manual or automatic gearboxes to reflect the car’s growing maturity in the small hatch sector.

The Renault Clio really hit its styling stride when the fourth-generation model was launched in 2013. Where the previous model had been clean-cut and, well, a bit boring on the eyes, the new car brought sharp looks and a sporty feel that made most its rivals feel dowdy.

Renault achieved this feat in a mainstream supermini thanks to the crisp appearance of the headlights that blended into the front grille.

This line went on to surround the large Renault ‘lozenge’ logo. It was a mark of how confident Renault felt in this new supermini’s good looks that its badge was so big. After all, why not shout about it and let people know who made the car when it was such a pretty thing?

Buyers certainly didn’t mind telling the world they were driving a Clio and the French car settled in to be one of the better sellers in its sector. Never quite a rival for the Ford Fiesta, Vauxhall Corsa and Volkswagen Polo for outright volume of sales, the Clio nevertheless impressed in other ways.

For starters, the engine line-up that Renault organised for this Clio included the excellent three-cylinder 0.9-litre TCe turbo petrol.

Offered with 90PS, this is the best motor to choose for almost any need thanks to its keen power delivery, refinement and low running costs. Late on this Clio’s life, a 75PS version of the 0.9-litre petrol engine arrived.

Other engines in the range included a 1.2-litre petrol that could be had in non-turbo 75PS form or turbocharged with 120PS.

There was also a smooth 1.5-litre turbodiesel with 90- or 110PS. You could order the diesel or the 1.2 TCe 120 with a six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, which addressed the slightly notchy feel of the five-speed manual.

To make the most of these engine’s power, Renault also shed 100kg of weight from this fourth-generation model compared to its immediate predecessor.

This not only helped with efficiency, but made the latest car much more enjoyable to drive. It handled with more eagerness in corners and the steering provided much more interaction between driver and front wheels.

However, the overriding impression from behind the wheel of the Clio is of a very grown-up, accomplished small car. This stems from the smooth ride that lets the Clio flow along roads with a serenity that few of its competitors can come close to. This stands up whether you’re nipping around town or heading along the motorway.

It’s a similarly positive story inside the Clio, where the cabin offers a good looking dash and in most models a 7-inch touchscreen that works with Renault’s R-Link infotainment system.

There is also better than class average space of passengers and luggage, though the French car doesn’t quite get up the same level as the Kia Rio or Skoda Fabia. This is also true of the cabin’s construction quality, which feels one step below the best cars in the sector.

This was addressed to some extent with a facelift in mid-2016, and the Clio always came generously equipped in its various trims and was one of the safest cars in the segment

Renault Clio (2013 – 2019) handling and engines

Driving Rating
Renault pitched the Clio’s driving qualities very well. The Clio opted for a supple approach, but comfort does not come at the expense of handling ability.

Renault Clio (2013 – 2019): Handling and ride quality

It makes the Renault a very relaxed place to be on longer trips and imbues it with a sense of maturity most of its rivals cannot match.

As for the handling, it’s very safe and assured, as you would expect from Renault that prizes safety very highly. It’s also nimble-toed when it comes to corners, so the Clio can be stirred into some fun when the driver is in the mood.

For more practical purposes, the Clio is one of the best superminis you can choose thanks to light, accurate steering. It makes it a pleasure to use in the city where your arms will not get weary when threading through narrow streets. And despite being longer and wider than its predecessor, this fourth generation Clio is still a piece of gateau to park.

Renault Clio (2013 – 2019): Engines

Renault kept it simple with the engines in this generation of Clio. You have a choice of 0.9- and 1.2-litre petrol engines and a single 1.5-litre turbodiesel.

The 75PS 1.2-litre motor was followed up not long after the Clio’s launch with a turbocharged version boasting 120PS. Decent enough in use and available with a six-speed automatic gearbox, this engine is not the best, so we’d guide you towards the three-cylinder 0.9-litre TCe turbo petrol. It started life with 90PS and a 75PS version was added later. The 90PS is an eager engine with good refinement.

The 1.5-litre turbodiesel is impressively quiet and economical, so if you need a small car to travel big distances this is a sound choice.

Renault Clio (2013 – 2019): Safety

The fourth generation Renault Clio has twin front, side and curtain airbags as standard, along with anti-whiplash headrests and two Isofix kiddy chair mounts are positioned in the back seats.

Renault fitted ESP traction and stability control, as well as a speed limiter, hill start assist and daytime running lights.

The Clio scored five-stars in Euro NCAP tests and also came out very well for adult and child occupant safety. It also rated a very impressive 99 per cent score for safety assistance systems at the time of its test in 2012 ahead of being launched.

Renault Clio (2013 – 2019): Practicality

The main dials are simple and easy to read, with a large digital speedo display to make sure you don’t wander over the limit inadvertently.

The steering wheel moves through wide arcs of height and reach adjustment. Coupled to the standard driver’s seat height movement for all models of Clio, it ensures that drivers of all shapes and sizes can find a good seating position for day-long comfort.

However, the foot pedals are slightly offset, which can induce an ache in the driver’s knees or hips on lengthier trips.

The fourth generation Renault Clio was designed as a five-door model only, so it makes no compromises when it comes to rear seat accommodation. It’s one of the more spacious superminis in the back and can easily allow adults to sit upright without worrying about their heads brushing the ceiling. The boot is one of the biggest in the class.

Renault Clio (2013 – 2019): Quality and finish

At first sight, all is well with the world in the Renault Clio’s cabin. It’s good to look at and the padded dash top imparts the sense of a more premium product.

However, this impression is short-lived because as soon as you start to feel most of the other plastics in the car’s interior, you notice they have that hard, brittle finish that shows they have been finished to a strict budget rather than the highest standard.

This is also true of other areas of the Clio’s finished product. For instance, the infotainment screen may be simple to use, but the sat-nav will not accept a seven-digit postcode.

Renault Clio (2013 – 2019): Infotainment

Only the two top Dynamique models of Renault Clio come with the 7-inch infotainment monitor as included kit. By the standards of the day when the car was launched in 2013, the infotainment was easy to use, though some will find the various sub-menus frustrating compared to more modern systems with quick shortcuts to your desired function.

Still, the display itself is easy to read and Renault’s R-Link system makes it easy to pair your smartphone with the car and access its various apps. R-Link was only standard on the Dynamique S model, so it’s a prized find on a lower trim version.

Renault Clio (2013 – 2019) value for money

Value for Money Rating
The Renault Clio 1.5-litre dCi 90 turbodiesel in Stop and Start Eco trim has an official combined consumption figure of 88.3mpg.

Renault Clio (2013 – 2019): Prices

You will find high mileage Renault Clios from 2013 starting at £3500, but examples with a more age-average distance under their wheels of 75,000 miles come in at £4500. This will give you a choice of petrol or diesel models in a variety of trims, so look out for a Dynamique version with MediaNav to get the best level of equipment.

A five-year old Clio with the 0.9 TCe engine and 50,000 miles to its name will cost you from £6000. That will bag you a Dynamique Nav model and there are plenty out there to choose from, so you can afford to be fussy about which colour and exact specification meet your needs.

Move forward to the end of this Clio’s production life and a year-old example with 10,000 miles to its name can be had for £8000. Or, you could seek out one of the very last with delivery miles only for around the £10,500 mark from a franchised dealer for the full back-up and a car that is virtually brand new.

Should you want a diesel-fuelled Clio, £6000 will be a sufficient budget to net you a five-year old 1.5 dCi in Energy, Play or Dynamique trims.

A car at this price point will likely come from a car supermarket or independent dealer and have a full service history and 45,000 miles under its wheels. As a result, it will have plenty of life left in it.

Renault Clio (2013 – 2019): Running Costs

In Real MPG conditions, the 1.5-litre dCi returns 60.5mpg. If you prefer a petrol engine, the 0.9-litre TCe 90 offers a claimed 61.4mpg and Real MPG of 48.1mpg.

A Renault Clio in 1.2-litre Play trim falls into insurance group 3, which makes it ideal for young drivers. A 0.9 TCe 90 in Dynamique trim sits in group 7. Upgrade that with MediaNav and it edges into group 10. At the other end of the scale, the GT Line Nav with the 1.2-litre engine is the most expensive non-Renaultsport version of the Clio to insure. It is in group 15.

For Clios registered on 1 April 2017 and after, they will pay a flat rate of £150 per year for Vehicle Excise Duty. With cars registered before this, you need to be sure which engine you pick if you want to minimise road tax costs.

The 0.9 TCe turbo petrol engine can offer emissions as low as 90g/km meaning VED is free. Others fall into the £20 per year bracket. The 1.2 TCe 120 can stray as high as 120g/km, which means £30 per year for road tax.

Model History

July 2012

Renault unveiled the fourth generation Clio

The interior gets a modern feel and user-friendliness thanks to the dashboard sculpted in the shape of an aircraft wing, the optimally-positioned multimedia system on the centre console, a wide range of colour options, a digital speedometer, comfortable seats and chrome and gloss-black trim highlights.

From launch, buyers could personalise the outside of their car with a selection of colour touches to the front grille, rear and side door inserts. To personalise the interior, the menu covers the dashboard, door panels, steering wheel, grab handles, gear lever and air vent surrounds, upholstery materials and optional floor mats. Thanks to attractively-priced option packs, buyers are able to choose the look and feel they prefer.

All versions of New Clio are available with a sound system integrated into the front doors’ loudspeakers. Known as Renault Bass Reflex, this system delivers the volume and listening enjoyment of a 30-litre home speaker system. Bass frequencies are more powerful and the threshold of saturation and distortion is pushed much higher.

The entire Clio range features Bluetooth-equipped radios for hands-free telephone operation and audio streaming from portable music players with excellent sound quality. All radios incorporate USB and jack sockets.

The new Renault Clio combines low fuel consumption with driving pleasure thanks to a significantly updated range of petrol and diesel engines. The two petrol engines (Energy TCe 90 and TCe 120) combine very low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions with responsive performance and mid-range acceleration. The significantly improved new-generation Energy dCi engines bestow New Clio with record-breaking fuel economy for the same driving pleasure.

The new Clio is the first Renault model to feature the new three-cylinder chain-cam petrol turbocharged Energy TCe 90 engine. This is the first three-cylinder powerplant ever produced by Renault and, from launch, will provide a remarkable balance between driving pleasure and fuel economy. This three-cylinder, turbocharged 899cc unit comes with Stop&Start and delivers the performance of a normally-aspirated 1.4-litre powerplant.

It has an ultra low-inertia turbo for satisfying response from low engine speeds: 90hp and 135Nm at 2,000rpm (90 per cent of peak torque available from 1,650rpm to 5,000rpm) plus an economy-optimised version with taller gear ratios and fuel consumption of 65.7 mpg, equivalent to CO2 emissions of 99g/km. This is a 21 per cent fuel consumption and CO2 emissions saving compared to the TCe 100 it replaces

The latest addition to the Energy family is a new 90hp version of the 1.5 dCi, equipped with Stop&Start. This is a four-cylinder 1.5-litre engine with 220Nm of torque available from 1,750rpm, an increase of 20Nm over the current dCi 85. An economy-optimised version with taller gear ratios which also qualifies for the Renault eco2 signature with fuel consumption of 88 mpg, equivalent to CO2 emissions 83g/km.

The new Clio is also available with the new, dynamic chain-cam TCe 120 4-cylinder engine mated to six-speed EDC transmission (Efficient Dual Clutch), a first for Renault in the B segment.

  • A four-cylinder 1.2-litre engine with the performance of a normally-aspirated 1.6 engine,
  • Direct fuel injection and turbocharging for peak power of 120hp and 190Nm of torque from 1,750rpm.

The TCe 120 engine became available in the first half of 2013. It is among the most powerful, yet most economical, engines in its class. and feels outstandingly smooth.

Along with the availability of EDC dual clutch transmission for the dCi 90 engine in the first half of 2013, the new Clio will mark a further step in expanding access to the driving pleasure and seamless gearshifts delivered by this responsive and frugal automatic transmission.

Over and above these engineering features, New Clio offers drivers an integrated suite of efficient solutions to help them reduce their fuel consumption and CO2 emissions:

Renault Clio GT-Line pricing announced

Starting at £17,395, the Clio GT-Line sits between the TCe 90 Dynamique S MediaNav and the 200hp RenaultSport Clio. With 120hp on tap, allied to much of the hot hatch style and features from the RenaultSport, but lower running and purchase costs.

Developed by RenaultSport, the five-door Clio GT-Line TCe 120 EDC is powered by a direct-injection 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine. It comes mated exclusively to a six-speed EDC (Efficient Dual Clutch) transmission via steering column-mounted gear shift paddles.

Sport Chassis is standard, with 30% stiffer chassis, 40% stiffer dampers and specific stops. Plus R.S. Drive. which offers two driving modes: Normal and Sport. Pressing the button sharpens up the car’s responses, including engine and gearbox mapping, ESC settings, steering feeling and throttle pedal response. Selecting Sport mode shaves 30 milliseconds off the shift time of 200ms for the gearchange. It also retains the multi-changedown function of the 200 Turbo EDC, simply by holding down the downshift paddle.

The new powertrain offers up 190Nm of torque, with a top speed of 121 mph. 0-60mph is achieved in 9.6 seconds. 54.3 mpg on the combined cycle and emissions of only 120g/km CO2.

New Clio GT-Line TCe 120 EDC boasts plenty of Renaultsport’s design cues, from its grille, GT front and rear bumpers and specific rear lip spoiler, to its side sills, offset LED daytime running lights, twin chrome exhaust tailpipes and GT badging both front and rear. Rounding off its purposeful looks are 17-inch anthracite GT alloys, together with co-ordinating anthracite door mirrors and rear diffuser.

The upmarket cabin boasts dark carbon GT upholstery, matched with details picked out in chrome and gloss black. A GT leather steering wheel with badging, Renaultsport seats with additional side support, aluminium-capped pedals, steering column-mounted gearshift paddles and specific instrument backgrounds all testify to the fact that this is a pedigree, high-performance Clio. Anthracite surrounds for the air vents, gearlever gaiter, plus inserts for the gearlever and door panels also give the car an air of exclusivity.

February 2015

GT Line Look Pack launched

Available for Dynamique MediaNav and Dynamique S MediaNav versions for a cost of £400.

The GT Line Look Pack adds GT Anthracite alloy wheels (16-inch on Dynamique MediaNav and 17-inch on Dynamique S MediaNav), GT front and rear bumpers topped with LED daytime running lights and a single chromed exhaust tailpipe. Also Anthracite door mirror casings and protective inserts on the doors, Renaultsport sill kick plates and GT Line badging included in the pack, which is available with the Glacier White, Diamond Black, Flame Red and Mercury paint choices.

The GT Line Look Pack is available on Dynamique MediaNav and Dynamique S MediaNav with the 90 hp 0.9-litre TCe and 90 hp 1.5 dCi engines.

Some interior trim details have also been changed on Dynamique MediaNav and Dynamique S MediaNav models, with or without the GT Line look pack. The interior lighting is now a more modern white rather than amber, grey replaces gloss black for the door armrests and handles, and MediaNav or R-Link inserts and air conditioning controls now have a matt chrome rather than a shiny chrome finish.

On Dynamique S MediaNav, GT Line and Renaultsport models the air vent surrounds are also in matt chrome, which has been applied to the air vent handle and gear knob of all Clios. The gear gaiter surround is now grey on Expression and Expression+ versions and gloss black on Dynamique MediaNav and Dynamique S MediaNav models, matt chrome dashboard rings become standard across the range and there is a matt chrome handbrake button and interior door handles, plus the steering wheel on models with a leather wheel rim. A rear parking camera also becomes available on the GT Line model for £250.

November 2015

Specification upgrades for Renault Clio announced

DAB radio is now standard equipment on Clios fitted with either the MediaNav or R-Link infotainment systems, meaning that all apart from entry-level versions now come with DAB as standard. DAB radio means passengers now have access to more radio stations whilst on the move. Both MediaNav and R-Link have also been upgraded, with the newly-redesigned MediaNav gaining Bluetooth™ streaming, TMC traffic information and SIRI “Eyes-Free” for compatible iPhones. The updated R-Link system has a new, clearer and more sensitive screen, allowing multi-touch gestures such as ‘pinch to zoom’.

The Clio Expression+ trim level has been renamed as Clio ‘Play’ to bring the B-segment supermini into line with its smaller city car sibling, Twingo. Meanwhile, the Dynamique S Nav gets a new-look leather steering wheel and grey upholstery.

The Clio is available in five trim levels and with a range of two petrol and one diesel efficient engines and is priced from £11,145. Despite the specification upgrades, the Clio is still available with numerous personalisation options such as the GT Line look pack, coloured 16” and 17” alloy wheels, exterior and interior coloured touch packs. Accessory packs such as the carbon-look Styling Pack, a sporty Spoiler Pack, a Protection Pack to include parking sensors and a Touring Pack with quick-release tow bar are all also still available.

November 2015

Clio Iconic 25 Nav launched

The Clio Iconic 25 Nav is available with TCe90 Stop & Start, dCi90 Stop & Start and dCi90 EDC engines. The decals complement the range of four stylish exterior colours on offer – Ivory, Diamond Black, Oyster Grey and Mercury.

Clio Iconic 25 Nav also receives a leather armrest and leather handbrake, matched with an aluminium gear lever. The unique black and white cross-hatch design seen on the exterior can also be found inside, with touches to the air vent surrounds and door armrest.

The Iconic 25 Nav builds on the top-of-the-range Dynamique S Nav trim which features automatic climate control with one touch quick demist function, rear electric windows and electrically adjustable, folding and heated door mirrors.

June 2016

Revised Clio unveiled

At the front, the grille which houses the Renault diamond has been redesigned, as has the lower part of the grille which is wider to add an even more modern feel to the front end. At the rear, the skirt has been redesigned for additional robustness.

Four new body colours have been added (Mars Red, Titanium Grey, Arctic White and Iron Blue), with a selection of new wheel and wheel trim designs, plus a more extensive personalisation programme.

All the upholsteries are new and special attention has been paid to the tactile and visual quality of the plastics’ grain-effect finish. The chrome trim features a more subdued, matt finish and the colours are more refined. In short, the new Clio forms a higher end package which strikes a desirable balance between seductive exterior styling and a high-quality interior finish.

The powerful, fuel-efficient 1.5 dCi 110 diesel engine mated to a six-speed manual gearbox is a new addition to the Clio, as is the availability of six-speed manual transmission for the TCe 120 petrol engine.

In addition to its reverse parking sensor, and depending on the version, the New Clio offers a front parking sensor and a reverse parking camera. Available for higher-end versions, Handsfree Parking allows the driver to fully delegate the completion of parking manoeuvres.

What to watch out for

02-02-2017:

Report of four TPMS sensors developing slow leaks over the past 18 months on a 2014 Renault Clio Dynamique Medianav Eco 90Tce. All replaced under Renault 4 year warranty.

25-04-2017:

Another report of TMPS valve sensors failing on a 2015 Renault Clio Dynamique. Three times already. Dealer told owner it is a fault with sensor valves on this model, which confirms 2-2-2017.

18-07-2017:

Report of timing chain of 2013 Renault Clio 90 TCe failing at 36,500 miles. Renault initially offered to pay 75% of repair costs (possibly an entirely new engine).

24-07-2017:

Report of 2014 Renault Clio 0.9 TCE Dynamique S Nav, run on superunleaded, stuttering from from cold and making it hard to accelerate smoothly. The turbo comes in like a light switch and even when warm, it can catch the driver out out at junctions or roundabouts with either no progress or jerky acceleration. Every time it goes in for a service, the Renault dealer says no updates available.

23-09-2017:

Report of timing chain tensioner of same 2014 Renault Clio 90 TCe failing at 42k miles. (Same as 24-7-2017.) The failed tensioner allowed the chain to flail around and eat into the crankcase so the car needed a new engine. This is anecdotal, but the Renault daler said it was the 5th case he had seen. Happily it was covered by the 4 year Renault warranty, but the new engine is only covered for 6 months. The worry is that if this is happening in Clios, it could also be happening in Capturs, Twingos, Smarts abd Dacias with the same 90 TCe engine.

20-09-2018:

Report of repeated failure of TPMS system on 2015 Renault Clio. So far has failed 4 times, though always fixed under the 4 year warranty that runs out in April 2019.

20-09-2018:

Separate report of problems with valve based TPMS on 2015 Renault Clio despite 4 replacements under warranty. Problem continues. Now advised that issue is corrosion on all four alloys at valve port hole. Rejected by Renault as warranty issue due to undefined "conditions". New alloys cost £1,000 approx. Or get wheels refurbished at owner's cost. Car is not 3 years old yet.

19-10-2018:

Report of timing chain tensioner failing on 2013 Renault Clio 90TCe at 64,000 miles resulting in £1,000 damage to the engine.

30-11-2018:

Report of a/c falure in 2013/63 Renault Clio Dynamique MediaNav, first noticed in May 2018. Despite out of 4 year warranty, Renault admitted a manufacturing fault and offered to pay 45% of the cost of repair, but the parts took 4 months to arrive.

03-04-2019:

Complaint of 2014 Renault Clio with 11,500 miles "jerking" when driver tries to reverse. Dealer says needs a new gearbox, unless reader misinterpreted and it actually needs a new clutch.

22-04-2019:

Report of judder from clutch of 2017 Renault Clio 1.2 16v 75HP model. Might be the release bearing.

24-05-2019:

Report of oil in coolant of 2014 Renault Clio 1.5 dCI at 32,000 miles.

07-08-2019:

Report of blown head gasket in Renaualt Clio 90 TCe.

13-11-2019:

Report of locking problem in the rain with 2017 Renault Clio. Owner came back to the car to find the lights on and the wipers running. Used keyless fob to open the hatchback. Either moisture got into the locking and windows ECU inside the driver's doot, or start/stop stopped the engine when the owner parked and he forgot to shut it dow,

What does the Renault Clio (2013 – 2019) cost?
