Volvo XC70 (2007 - 2016)
2.4D DRIVe SE Lux Auto 4 X 4
Superbly practical and comfortable
This has to be one of the most comfortable cars I have ever owned, Jags and M-Bs included. It is also exceptionally economical considering its weight, size and 4WD hindrances; it does 40+mpg on a run and has never used a drop of oil. It is also very easy on tyres and has only broken down twice in its life, once with a broken front suspension (apparently a known weakness on this model) and once with an ECU fault (quite expensive outside of warranty).
However, there have been downsides.
The ride and handling is a bit soft and sloppy so it can't be driven with any spirit along winding roads as the body roll undermines your confidence.
But the biggest downside, and what has led me to sell it is the dealer experience.
There are extremely good main dealers (eg the Canterbury, Kent dealership) but there are some really awful dealerships and the two nearest main dealers to me completely broke my confidence in the brand.
Every time the car needed a service I encountered a game of "let's see what we can add to the bill" so I encountered everything from screenwash (£7) when I had only just topped it up before taking it in for a service, to a service item (handbrake service) - cost £67 - that didn't actually exist according to Volvo UK. Wipers were charged for although I had only replaced these two months previously and when I asked for the old ones back they had mysteriously disappeared. These are just the highlights !!
OK, so the car was great but who wants to be treated like an i**** by the dealer every time the car is in for a service.
So, after putting up with this treatment for over six years, when it came time for me to change the car I went to Audi
