Volkswagen Sharan (2010 - 2021)
SE 2.0 TDI (140ps) 5dr People Carrier
Amazingly economical
I've had this car for a month or so now, and although I have to admit that it wouldn't be top of my list for pulling birds, it is extremely good at what it does.
I completed a 500-odd mile trip yesterday, averaging 56mpg, in fairly grotty conditions. That's amazing for a car of this size, and is a good 10-12mpg better than I would have expected from my previous car, which was a last generation Seat Alhambra.
It's the details that are winning me over - the seamless integration with my phone and Ipod, the automatic stop-start and handbrake, and the general comfort of the car which means a day's driving can be done without leaving you totally drained.
The folding seats are a big improvement on the old version Shalahambra, although the downside is that there is noticeably less space in the boot than in the old car (with the seats removed, that is).
Things that I would change? well, not much really. The sliding doors are good, but can be a bit tricky to close from the inside. I'd like a heated front screen, and a few more storage cubby holes around the driver, but otherwise it can see it being a worthy, if slightly dull, servant for the next few years.
One point to note - it is very difficult to find an affordable bike carrier for this car. Only the VW approved rear carrier seems to fit, which at £400+ is a lot for 2 bikes. Fitting a towbar is an option, but the complex electrics mean that this costs nearly £600. Hopefully some enterprising companies will make a suitable bike carrier soon...
