Disappointing injectors failure at 108,000 miles leading to sc***ping engine

Just been told by a ex VW, non-dealer mechanic that all four injectors are sc*** after testing. Two not working, the other two didn't pass the muster either.

Piston in cylinder 4 broke at the cam shaft end.

Car was on variable service. Oil changed religiously, Dealer serviced up to 54,000, and then a sympathy dealer service before selling at 59,000.

I changed to 10,000 mile interval and started using normal mineral oil at 100,000.

I thought I hadn't put the fuel filter together properly, hence a fuel smell. When the mechanic tried refurbed injectors, it still ran badly, so he took the head off, which was full of fuel in all four cylinders. Cylinder four piston had snapped at the camshaft end.

Options 1 is walk away, (mechanic will give me £1200 for it.
Option 2 is a second hand engine, just a straight swap for £4000 approx., or a new block, inspect the cam etc., new fly wheel and clutch for £5000 to £6000. Only problem with the last one is there are cheaper cars, the same age and fewer miles on eBay. Option 1 then it is.
