Vauxhall Meriva (2003 - 2009)
1.7 CDTI
Very practical and competent, a bit flimsy feeling
I needed a car with a high driving position - the visibility advantages far outweigh any cornering issues (and who outside Top Gear presenters drive in a way which provokes cornering issues anyway??), plus it had to be the family holdall with plenty of room for students going back to Uni etc. I do 5000-6000 miles a year, mainly short haul.
The 1.7 diesel is THE engine of choice - 55mpg and plenty of overtaking power when needed (although make sure you exploit the gears).
The compact size of this thing is astonishing: it's barely bigger than a Corsa and yet you can almost lie down in it when the seats are flat.
Negatives: the car has a flimsy feel in terms of build, especially in the running gear. It really struggles with speed bumps and soaks up potholes very poorly, so best driven with caution.
As practical as an angler's jacket, but it moves about like a car with rather small shoes on.
