Mixed bag

Bought to replace a Mitsubishi Colt 1.5DiD which went like a rocket and gave 70mpg. The old Colt sadly had a ride as rough as an oxcart , so needed replacing.
This little thing impresses in many ways. Lots of boot space with the rear seats down , loads of cubbyholes , excellent spec with the aircon and electric heated mirrors. Decent stereo but no bluetooth or even aux in (too early for that possibly).
But here's the big caveat...despite being relatively gutless (which is no biggie ) it's fuel economy is absolutely awful.
55 mpg combined ? Yeah , right. I've checked it countless times , the best I can get with VERY careful driving is 40mpg , sometimes slipping to 37mpg.
This , after the Colt which went like stink and returned 70mpg easily , is simply awful. Granted , the Colt was an old school diesel and the Splash is petrol , but come on...
Oh yeah , and the gear change reminds me of the crash box on an old lorry I used to drive.
