Suzuki Grand Vitara (2005 - 2014)
2.4 SZ5 5dr 4 X 4
Does what it says on the tin
Replaced a Passat cc as I wanted something to cope with our atrocious roads and give peace of mind in winter.
It sits on 18" wheels and as a result the ride is a bit bouncy. The engine is smooth and quiet and has a bit of poke if you need to push on.
The interior is roomy enough with plenty of load space in the rear.
All the controls are light and easy.
The dashboard is a bit dated with too many buttons to push to control the trip computer.
It has had two long journeys since purchase both over 200 miles and the computer showed 35.5 mpg so low 30's are a realistic figure.
A journey of 16 miles daily which includes town and country driving gives a realistic figure of 29mpg. Not too bad for a permanent four wheel drive truck with a 2.4 litre engine.
It could actually do with a long-legged sixth gear for even better fuel economy but I suppose it wasn't really built for motorway driving.
The killer for some will be VED of 280 a year. I bought it knowing this and can live with it.
Leather trim, HID headlamps, cruise control, climate control and an electric sunroof are reasonable spec but the fact that the sound system cannot take a USB enabled device is poor in this day and age. I understand that 2013 models have an upgraded system that does.
They also come with a spare wheel on the rear door which mine doesn't (just a tyre puncture sealant kit).
Overall I like the car for its honesty and feeling of solidity. It isn't one of the latest SUVs trying to be a car. It knows what it is and is all the better for it.
