Subaru Forester (2002 - 2008)
2.5 XT 4 X 4
A racing camel - looks odd but brilliantly fast and practical everywhere !
I needed a car that could cope with farm tracks as easily as motorways. My Astra J VXR was just too hard and low.
I found a mint 2008 Forester and decided to give it a shot.
There is basically no styling outside or in. An etch-a-sketch external design, and a hotch-potch of different shapes and materials inside means tht nobody buys a Forester to pose in.
Thats about it for negatives though.
The exterior is wonderfully usable in size: easy to park and navigate while being roomy and wonderfully light and airy inside. All the contact points feel great - Momo wheel, leather gearknob, comfy seats, responsive pedals.
The engine is every bit as charismatic as it is in the Impreza WRX , but a whole lot less peaky.
Power everywhere yet still a wayward dollop of high revs poke for surprising acceleration.
Throughout the bad snow recently this car was not encumbered for one second. Two feet of snow dispatched like it was nothing. Ice,muddy farm tacks just the same. This is a true go anywhere , usable car.
Its not for everyone: it has no cachet or aspirational attributes to onlookers, but to those that get it this is one of the best all rounders ever made.
