SEAT Mii (2012 - 2019)
SE 1.0 3dr Hatchback
Bright, perky and promising
Looking for an economical small car, the Mii/Citigo/Up with its low group 1 insurance, band B VED, the promise of good mpg figures and modern design are obvious contenders.
Initially I was looking for an ex-demonstrator. It appears that black and white are the most popular colours as they are priced at a premium to red and yellow (least popular/cheapest).
I contacted a Seat dealer who was advertising a low miles, pre-registered car and was very pleased to be offered an unregistered car at an exceptionally competitive price – certainly a lot less than a well known online car broker was quoting. Maybe I was lucky, enquiring in the middle of March for a car that could be delivered in the same month – dealer targets, bonuses etc.
The SE has a good spec with heated electric mirrors and a decent radio. The Seat portable system was on back order when I took delivery so I have yet to experience this infotainment system. My car also has the optional city safety assist – which detects likely collisions at speeds of 18 mph and below and applies the brakes automatically.
The 3 cylinder engine is 'rorty' in character and the gear change indicator suggests upshifting at quite low revs – it doesn't seem right changing up to fifth around 36 mph. Seat comfort is good and the car is quiet and relaxing when cruising on the motorway. The interior style is a matter of personal taste and personally I find the use of light plastics and fabrics attractive.
The Mii copes with long motorway ascents without distress (no need to downshift) and keeps up with traffic flows with ease. I suggest ignoring some magazines' advice to buy the 75 PS model – the 60 PS seems more than adequate for everyday driving in my experience.
The cabin is very well screwed together with no rattles or creaks. The small boot is a useful shape, being deep, and comfortably accommodates the weekly shop for a family of four.
Overall, the Mii offers low cost motoring in a compact and contemporary package. It's worth considering the Mii, Citigo and Up as direct equivalents and shop around for the best deal available.
