Beautiful but the looks dont match the performance, build quality or economy of its rivals

Fell in love with the cars looks and got a good deal from a dealer with the MD`s car which was heavily loaded with extras and it saved me over £10000 on the new price and it was only 13 months old and had less than 9k on the clock. However having owned a BMW 330d E46 this car cannot match it for performance or economy. The best MPG I can get on a brim to brim with mixed driving on a 14 mile commute is 39 mpg. I find that dissapointing when you consider that the BMW 320d efficiency dynamics coupe or saloon claims 58 mpg combined, and that on a car built in in late 2007. I find that pulling away in first car is something I have yet to master as unless you get the revs just right the car either seems to be listless untill it hits its power band or the traction control kicks in. 1st is a short gear like most diesels but feels way to short and your rushing to get 2nd. 3rd and 4th gear are great with plenty of torque and it pulls very well. I find that when the car is at full working temperature that I sometimes get a surging and falling off of power intermittantly. I believe this may be due to the FAP activating as it never does it on a cold engine, however it feels pronounced when it occurs. Also there is a rattle or two from the dash which is dissapointing on a car which is supposed to be competing with BMW and Audi. All the gadgetry is great and I love the Bose sound system and the sat nav which is supurb, just a shame there is not a postcode search on the routing. My friends love it for its looks and equipment but all are dissapointed at its mpg which should be better for a car so new in production. My 2001 BMW 330d did better averaging 47mpg at 85mph on the motorway.
I have reported the power surging and the rattle and hope to have them sorted on the next service. There has been one recall to reprogramme the passanger door control unit.
