Renault Clio (2001 - 2007)
Campus 1.2 16v 2006 5dr
Reasonable for a tight budget and not too great expectations..
I bought this vehicle for my own small business, due to a tight budget, in that time. My company has just been settled, in that year, and I was in need of an economy vehicle, as soon as possible.
I got to this Clio Campus 1.2 16v 75 BHP, in "cyclone blue" colour, brand new. I have driven 110.000 miles with it, until I have sold it, to a friend, in 2010. Not one technical problem, just usual maintainance. The engine is quite revvy and has a reasonable pulling power, for an 1.2 liter. The fuel economy was according to the claims, so nothing to comment.
Of course, the entire feeling of cheap plastic and metal sheets, specific to Renault cars, is well known. But, as a buyer, you know this before you pay it. If you can cope with it, plus the depreciation and the "badge" perception, it can be a reasonable car, which will help your small business.
The running costs are low but, only if you choose the right service shop. I have chosen not to care about the warranty and did all the maintainance, using an independent small car service. I do not trust dealerships and "genuine parts", as you can find better quality aftermarket parts (and referring only to prestigious brands, not no-name) at lower or same price.
The change of spark plugs have to be done at the dealership, due to Renault's proprietary tool, that has to be used to dismantle the D4F's engine's spark plugs. Even then, I have insisted to replace them with a brand chosen by myself.
Negative issues? Cheap interior quality, wind noise, uncomfortable seats and driving position etc...but, if you are reading this, you already know all these, from any other online review...
In the end, if you want to buy this car, just think about your budget and how you are going to use it. It just does the basics, taking you from A to B, cheap and, if serviced properly, for many miles.
Nothing less, nothing more.
