Peugeot 407 SW (2004 - 2011)
2.0hdi Zenith Estate
Fantastic !
Bought to replace mk3 Mondeo saloon. So far has delivered excellent mpg and is very comfortable. Have done over 10,000 miles in just over six months and only a wheel bearing had needed replacing which was done under warranty. Six speed box with cruise control is great for my fortnightly trip to Manchester and back, at 70mph I get around 55mpg. Even at around 80 it is getting 50mpg! Have had the aux inputs on the radio activated and fitted the adaptor for an mp3 player. Bit of a pain that it you need to find someone with the right software but look for an independent garage. Peugeot wanted around £60, got it done for £20.
On the downside, rear seat leg room is poor if you are tall, front parking sensors would be more use than the rear ones due to the overhang at the front. Steer clear of Pirellis when it comes to tyres. Think they were original fitment but are awful for ride and grip. Now using Nexens and are 100 times better and half the price. Timing belt interval is huge but will be getting it done well before the 150,000 miles or 10 years.
Mine has no DPF or fap additive and from what I hear, what ever you save on tax with the later models you will lose when either needs attention.
Not had much to do with the dealers, so couldn't give an opinion.
Insurance is a bit on the high side. Ride and handling ate not bad but not as good as the Mondeo it replaced.
Overall, extremely happy with it.
Have now completed just short of 20,000 miles in 14 months and all is still good!! Just come back from a week away in Wales with 3 children and 2 adults plus as much luggage as i could possibly fit in and still managed 54 mpg! Strangely the mpg is better when loaded and worked hard. MOT went through with no advisories and just a service as per the schedule. It does lack space for luggage and this would be one of the main reasons for changing it, but not yet!!
Now up to 116000 miles and problems! Started getting difficult to start and suspected a lazy starter motor, but now seems that the dual mass flywheel is on its way out! have been quoted just over £1000 for the clutch, flywheel and starter motor. unfortunately its also due a service and cam belt change so not sure what to do with it now?
Another issue has come up as well. The panoramic glass roof is NOT covered by the glass policy on your insurance!!! Noticed mine had developed a crack on the n/s/f corner from a stone chip but the only way I can claim is as an accident claim and lose my no claims. Peugeot have quoted in excess 0f £1200 and the best independent quote has been £980. Thinking its time to pass it on!!!
Well, now 2 years of ownership! 125000 miles now. Had the clutch done and got the warranty company to pay for 2/3 of the job! Have had the dual mass flywheel replaced with a solid flywheel and noticed very little difference, if anything acceleration is better. Crack in the roof hasn't got any worse so just living with it. Not doing as much mileage now so considering switching to a petrol but I sort of like the Peugeot but the kids are getting bigger so more rear leg room is going to be the main reason it goes this year.
Into the third year of ownership and it sailed through the MOT. Just had discs and pads all round and seemed a bit expensive but it's the first I've had on the car. Now done 125,000 miles. Actually wound it up the other night and hit just short of an indicated 140mph! Of course this was on a private test track! Still seems to be life in it yet. Only concern is it seems to be getting a bit smokey but not using oil or water so may just be the injectors getting a bit tired. Currently being tempted to change to an E class, but only for the space.
