Great open top fun car for a two car family
By far the worst thing about the two door 206 and 206cc is the seat sliding mechanism which is over complicated and defeats the cleverest mechanic. Designed with the seat adjustment interlocked with the seat back forward flip, it just doesn't do what you want it to do. It can leave the seat (normally the passenger seat) not locking at all in any position - or the seat not able to be moved back. The seat mechanism is not broken and can always be eventually correctedonly by getting out of the car and playing with it but it does defeat all logic. Peugeot corrected this very poor design on the 207 to the relief of dealers.
Biggest problem with the auto is the known failure of the gearbox solenoids in midddle age. The symptom is that the car will periodically stick in third gear refusing to go into fourth. The temporary remedy is remarkably simple. Stop the car. Turn off the engine and start all over again. The bad news is that the Peugeot repair for this is costly and almost certainly comes at a time when the car is out of warranty. Allow £650-£700 and check any auto you are looking at buying goes smoothly into fourth gear by testing on a faster road, not just in back streets. If the problem has been corrected, it is unlikely to recur.
The car has a good sound system, a cavernous boot and definely not a four seater. It also has excellent leg room and fine to drive if you are over 6 feet. But be warned - the car does not carry a spare wheel. Whilst it has a puncture repair kit a blow out and tyre fire from running flat on a low profile tyre is rather more likely than a puncture. The only option then is then recovery with some necessary interchange of tyres first if the flat is on the rear - it has happened twice to our car.
