MG 5 EV (2021 on)
Exclusive Long Range 156 Electric 61.1kWh 5dr
Practical, Comfortable and so cheap to run.
Well dipped my toe into the EV pool. Wanted a practical, economical and comfortable car to replace my daily drive, a Citroen Berlingo Multispace, which was very, very practical, very economical and reasonably comfortable. Only though of selling due to the high second hand car prices and the lower cost to change. Looked at most of the main stream EVs which were all SUVs and had price tags north of £50K. Then I found the MG 5 EV. The test drive was an eye opener. Most of the reviews I had read commentated on the fact that its on-board Tech and driving dynamics were not up to the standards of Audi, BMW etc. which is true. But when compared to my Citroen it was lightyears ahead. And then there was the price. Nearly half of what I had been looking at and it’s got a 7 year warranty. Got a cracking deal (under £28K) and ordered one in Early December.
Took delivery early March and so far am very impressed. Does everything I want, Has all the Tech I need, and more. I am 6’ 2” and find the car extremely comfortable and has more than enough space to carry everything I need. It’s incredibly economical, especially when charging at home on the cheap overnight tariff and using the free chargers at supermarkets. I’ve done a couple of long trips and have had no issues with range or charging on the public charging networks.
Build quality seems very good, although I will be applying some more corrosion protection on the vulnerable areas underneath, as what’s on there seems a bit thin and patchy. No knocks or rattles so far. It has 16 inch wheels and high sidewall tyres which makes for a very comfortable ride, no banging and crashing on rough road surfaces which is a welcome change. Only additions I have made are mud flaps, spare wheel kit (eBay) and a boot liner to keep things clean. I will be getting the rear passenger and load bay windows tinted as the large glass area is all clear. Great visibility but I think things will get hot in the back, if and when we get better weather, plus it stops prying eyes.
All in all a very practical, comfortable car which costs pennies to run. (Insurance was about £80 more than the Berlingo). I’ll admit it’s not got futuristic styling but it is extremely good value for money, for an EV, and it is comparable with main stream cars of a similar size with an internal combustion engine. Given what’s happening with fuel prices it’s a joy not to have to visit a petrol station anymore. On a final point. One of my neighbours has a premium brand SUV EV. It was over £60K to buy. It looks fantastic, but the MG5 does 80+% of what it can do, and so far hasn’t suffered any of the electrical or build quality issues that this premium brand has. Makes you think!
