Mercedes-Benz SLK (2004 - 2011)
SLK350 7GTronic Open top tourer
Looks good, drives brilliant, comfortable enough for 6ft 3inch, 30.2 mpg on mixed driving.
I've tried, TR4A, MX6, MGB GT, MG TF, Porsche Boxster and now got Mercedes SLK 350 auto. What a car, best sports vehicle I have owned, can't fault it, there's plenty of comfortable driving positions for me at 6ft 3inches, the auto box is a joy in either manual, comfortable or sports selection and the self learning gearbox will adjust to your style of driving and change the gear shifts to suit.
The auto roof is a joy to operate and the car looks the business with it either up or down. I have sat nav, neck level heating, seat heating, folding side mirrors, auto memory and power seating, six disc CD auto and Bluetooth phone connectivity, everything you could wish for in a car.
If I am being critical, I am shod with 18" wheels and they are low profile tyres which makes it very hard when normally driving, but you get the cornering benefit so you could say it's a balance. The spare wheel is an inflatable space master from Vredestein and mine would not inflate symmetrically after 10 years in the boot and therefore I have had to purchase a new one from MB at a whooping cost of £219.0. The power steering can also feel a little heavy, but then it helps you "drive" the car.
One last critique, there is so much electrical equipment draining the battery that I have to have it on trickle charge most of the time and the battery is only 6 months old, I have had the charging rate and battery checked and MB says they are perfect and the loss of charge is because of all the equipment, and to be sure to lower and raise the roof with the engine going.
But I would not hesitate to recommend the car you can use the power all the time and return about 22 mpg, but if you drive sensibly and use the power only when needed then you will get 30+ which is brilliant for a 3.5lt auto.
