Why an ES is loved by it's owners

I know the ES is not loved by motoring critics so why did I buy it? Because it’s a Lexus and I love the toys. I wasn’t interested in any model other than a Takumi as it underlines what Lexus is about. So let’s start with the things I love.
Mark Levinson surround sound.
Sunroof - that can be opened with the windows from the key fob to let the summer heat out.
Semi-aniline leather.
Ventilated front seats that provide just about enough air to ensure there’s no sweaty backs or bums even in the hottest weather.
Memory front seats with too many adjustments to list.
Spacious rear seats that recline – loved by my wife when relegated to the back seat.
Rear screen and window sun blinds – also loved by my wife.
Three zone AC – ditto.
Heads up display.
A proper boot as the battery is under the rear seat.
10 year/100k mile warrantee.
Things I don’t like:-
Front wheel drive.
The 4 cylinder engine is a bit raucous when asked to go and it’s not like the six cylinder waft of the old GS or a German equivalent but performance and noise are just about acceptable.
Super sensitive traction control and collision detection with automatic braking.
Cruise controls on steering wheel.
Overall this car has a super smooth ride and does not need the stereo volume to be wound up to drown out the road noise, I do it just for the enjoyment. It is exceptionally comfortable and a pleasure to be in whether around town or on the motorway. I would prefer the feel of rear wheel drive and performance of a German equivalent but how often can you really use it and how much difference does it make. And let’s face it to find a second-hand German car with a decent sound system, sunshine roof and real leather (sorry I find Artico most unpleasant) severely limits your choices.
There seems to be no direct connection between the engine and the wheels unless the gear selector is in “S” and takes a bit of getting used to. In “S” mode and using the paddles to change gear mpg can drop significantly but handy when more throttle control is required such as pulling out from a tricky junction. Otherwise when in Drive or Sport mode the petrol engine starts and stops seamlessly and is matched by seamless CVT “gear changes”. Coming from a GS the front wheel drive understeer is noticeable when travelling at the speed limit on A roads but you get used to it. If you want the most comfortable relaxed journey for both yourself and your passengers this car is difficult to beat.
