Hyundai ix20 (2010 - 2018)
1.6 automatic SE Nav
Practical, roomy, solidly built, great quality but not the quickest around
I bought my ix20 after owning a Mk1 Ford Focus 1600 manual hatchback for 20 years, which I loved. I was looking for an automatic that had good headroom (I’m 6’4”), comfortable seats, good reliability and a decent sized engine. After looking at many SUVs, I settled on the ix20 MPV. It ticked all of the boxes, especially roof height and high driving position. This is a great car, even if the external styling is a little dull. The boot is a good size and the load space is cavernous with the rear seats folded flat. The interior gives the impression that this is a quality car and all switches and controls feel ‘right’. I haven’t owned the car long enough to give a proper assessment on cost of maintenance but I do have the remainder of a 5 year manufacturer’s warranty, which is comforting. The only downside for the ix20 as far as I am concerned is the disappointing fuel economy. I think the car is perhaps heavier than some others on the market and this, coupled with the automatic box and larger engine has an impact on mpg. The performance of the ix20 couldn’t be called sporty but on the other hand, the car does feel really solid, well screwed together and drives smoothly. A used ix20 is definitely worth a look, especially if you are a taller driver.
