Honda HR-V (2021 on)
Advance 1.5h i-MMD 131 Electric Motor Pwr eCVT Auto Start/Stop 5dr
Competent and Efficient
It has been 6 months since I bought my HR-V Advance and it has been 100% reliable to date. The finish is excellent inside and out. Overall the interior ambience is correct for the price, neither plush nor utilitarian. A little more adjustment in the steering wheel would be good, and slightly softer seats. The 5 year service package was included in my purchase price too.
The driving experience is competent and efficient, averaging 68.3 mpg over 3500 miles of mixed driving. The semi-autonomous drive (adaptive cruise and lane assist) makes for a relaxing experience on motorways. The engine, if driven to its strengths, is quiet. The suspension absorbs bumps and humps well in town. The rear torsion beam axle can hop and skip a little on bumpy corners. It’s almost impossible to detect the switch from electric to petrol motor. The HR-V glides along using the electric motor alone at conservative motorway speeds, switching imperceptibly with the combustion engine at regular intervals. The steering is precise and well weighted, and the electric motor adds a spritely boost off the mark at traffic lights, amply quick enough for everyday driving.
The flip side of all this efficiency is that it’s a fairly anodyne drive compared to my old non-hybrid car. If I could suggest a couple of improvements to Honda, they would be to improve soundproofing from road noise and upgrade the rear beam axle for better ride. Overall, it is a well-equipped and efficient vehicle and value for money.
