Overall reliability

Decent car, reliable enough, although a bit noisy on motorway.

I have owned this car for nearly 3 years now. It was bought at 35k miles on the clock and I have since added another 60k odd miles on top of that. This is one of the very first mk2 Focus, first registered in December 2004.

List of things I have spent money on:
1) New steering rack : £500
2) New brake discs due to binding : £100
3) Split turbo boost pipe: £200
4) Rear Wheel bearing :£100
5) New windscreen washer pump: £10

Apart from the usual wear and tear, services, new tyres etc. the car has been reliable. Ok I could have done without spending money on a new steering rack but this sort of thing is bound to happen when buying a used car.

Things I have added myself:
Parking sensors - had to get a new bumper strips with holes pre-drilled (this is only for mk2)
New (to me) Ford radio with Aux button, the one with a silver fascia.
Added Aux input so I can play MP3 player.
Changed LED on speedo meters, heater control, window controls, headlight control from humble green LEDs to white. Mileage display is lit in blue. It gives the car a whole new life and I am still loving it.

CONS:
The car came with 17 inch alloys which I had changed a year later due to bumpy rides as well as having to pay more for tyres. The 16 inch alloys are a bit softer on bumps and tyres are a bit cheaper too.

I have been using mid range tyres i.e Hankook S1 Evo and Kumho KU31. Road noise with Kumho tyres is less noticeable although I do think it is still a bit noisy, but tends to get used to it after a while.

Handbrake could have been designed a lot better i.e it does not hold the car well at all. My mechanic often adjusted the handbrake but I have to say Focus handbrake is the worse I have experienced so far. Try putting your handbrake with your car on a slope, usual rules applies i.e put into gears but with Focus make you pull the handbrake is as far a possible, which can be a hard work if you're not used to it and oh just pray that it would not roll forward or back. I assume this is due to rear drum brakes on anything below 1.8 litre engine, which they still do on mk3.

Courtesy light only for front occupants.

Glove box which goes deep into the dashboard.

Carnivorous dashboard which tends to get in the way of my legs, luckily I am only a small guy.

No foot rest next to clutch pedal.

Rear leg room could be improved.

PROS:

1.6 TDCI has enough power to pull the car which is the main highlight of the car itself, in my opinion it is quick enough for my need. Mine does not have DPF to worry about too.

The handling is well what can I say handles like as if "its on the rails", chuck it around bends and it will oblige.

Zetec steering wheel is nice, yes it is neat. The steering is spot on, basically just point the steering wheel where you want it to go. The steering wheel is noticeably straight when driving on the motorway too.

I can also change my steering settings, but I normally use Standard or Comfort over Sport mode.

Audio controls on the steering wheel/column are neat touch.

The seats are reasonably comfortable if not a tad small and I am a small guy!

Boots are enormous, I have even carried 2 mountain bikes with rear seats folded down. I think there is enough room for 2 more.

Visibility is great all around with decent size mirrors.

I like heated front windscreen.

Top of dashboard is made of soft material.

Engine noise is well suppressed.

I am pleased with the car even with those little niggles as mentioned previously. It is a decent enough car, I would not say it is/was a class leader but it is not far off.
