Fiat Stilo (2002 - 2007)
1.2 Active
Reliable and cheap to run.
We have three Stilo's in our family at the moment, one 1.2 and two 1.6. The first purchase was the 1.2. We bought this car for my wife and was impressed with the room and versatility of the interior. Outside styling wasn't much to my liking, but my wife is more a function over style person.
The car had only covered 6500 miles from new and cost £5000.00. It has now covered 85,000 miles and had it's first engine problem last week, which was an easily diagnosed spark plug coil costing around £30 to replace. Other than that, apart from from brake pads and having the air con re-gassed every year, it has been a reliable cheap to run car returning 42mpg, although the annoying air bag light was on for a while until I fixed the connection under the drivers seat.
The 1.6 models are much the same, a coil replaced at 38000 on the 03 reg bought in 2005 and also the air bag under seat repair. This car also developed a stalling/tick-over problem which again was easily rectified by cleaning out the throttle valve / body housing.
All in all both the 1.2 and 1.6 cars have proved reliable although the bigger engine performs only slightly better it does cost more to run as it only returns 36 mpg. I would definitely recommend these cars, but make sure everything works before you buy.
