BMW X3 (2018 on)
5-door SE automatic
Powerful engine in a very comfortable car.
I bought my 3 litre BMW X3 as a replacement tow-car for my caravan, having had a 2 litre version for the past 7 years.
BMW have made the X3s lighter, so I had to buy the 3 litre version in order to keep the kerb weight high enough to achieve towing stability.
The 6-cylinder engine is very smooth, and handles the 1700Kg caravan well, while the interior comfort is everything I would expect in a car in this price bracket.
Disappointingly, there are no front fog lights on the SE trim version, and the door mirrors are so flimsy, that attaching additional towing mirrors is very difficult.
Another area where BMW appear to have skimped, is under the bonnet, where sound-deadening insulation has been dropped.
On the road, the car handles well, although the steering has very little 'feel'.
The automatic gearbox ratios are well-chosen, and acceleration is excellent, although there is a slight delay when setting of from stationary.
Fuel economy is good for a car of this size: 42mpg in average driving and around 30mpg while towing.
