Audi A5 (2007 - 2016)
3.0 TDI quattro Auto Coupe
Good looking car with fine engine and useful all wheel drive but with some annoying drawbacks
I chose the A5 as I was looking for a quality car with a good engine - I really liked the 3.0 deisel I had in my previous 5 series BMW - but wanted all wheel drive that would not leave me stranded in the snow and ice.
The car is a good looking coupe. The engine is excellent - very quick when required but also economical. Sadly this is let down by the auto gearbox which suffers from huge lag and is not a patch on the auto gearbox of the 5 series which I had before.
The ride is firm with the large wheels but acceptable for a sports coupe.
The lack of attention to detail is poor for such an expensive car. The dash is very cluttered and complex. The sat nav will not allow you to search for a full UK postcode - as a £2,000 option this is very very poor. There is no oil dip stick - instead relying on electronic feedback. The Ipod connector (another extra!) does not work with Iphones.
Possibly the worst issue though is the door design. The windows need to drop to open the door. When frozen they will not drop until it has defrosted enought to open the window. This can take several minutes of defrosting the windows and running the car engine in morning. Do drivers in Germany no leave their A5's out at night !?
