Renault Twingo 2026: Prices, specs and release date
- New Renault Twingo reborn as an affordable electric car
- Four-door city car will have modern retro styling
- Will be very efficient and boast ultra-low lifecycle CO2
- Due on sale in 2026 with prices from £17,000 – or £70 a month
The new Renault Twingo sees a surprise rebirth for one of Renault’s most famous and beloved small cars of the 1990s – and it’s coming back as an ultra-affordable electric car.
Joining a retro Renault line-up that includes a new electric Renault 5 and Renault 4, the new Renault Twingo will be an ultra-affordable city car with a simple nature and desirable modern styling.
The new Renault Twingo will also be engineered in a completely new way, which the firm says will deliver 75% lower CO2 than the average European petrol car over its total lifecycle. Development will be carried out by Renault’s new expert electric car division called Ampere.
Arriving in 2026, the new Renault Twingo will take on other affordable rivals such as the new Citroen e-C3 and upcoming Dacia Spring, helping make EVs more accessible to new car buyer.
The new Renault Twingo will sit below the new Renault 5 hatch and Renault 4 small SUV, to create a very compelling line-up of iconic new Renault electric cars.
2026 Renault Twingo prices and release date
The new Renault Twingo promises to go on sale for an extremely affordable starting price of under £17,000. These prices will be even lower than the new Citroen e-C3.
Expect it to be offered with ultra-competitive finance packages – the firm is talking of prices from under £70 a month.
The new Renault Twingo is still a little way off, though. It is due to be released in 2026.
2026 Renault Twingo styling, interior and technology
The new Renault Twingo has been shown in concept car guise but Renault calls it a “fit-for-purpose urban vehicle with no compromise”.
Styling features which are likely to find their way to the new Renault Twingo include the cute frog’s eye headlights, modernised here with full LED technology. The ultra-short bonnet gives it a ‘monospace’ look, and the air intakes of the classic Twingo have been reimagined as little digital readouts showing how much battery charge is left.
The new Renault Twingo is a short, compact car – a genuine city car – but still has four doors. The rear door handles are hidden, while the front handles form a stylish round detail, again mimicking the original.
It sports a contrast-colour upper hatchback and although this concept is still officially called Renault Legend, the Twingo lettering on the bootlid makes it clear what the company has in mind.
The interior of the new Renault Twingo has not yet been revealed. However, the original was famous for its modern, designer-led minimalism and we expect the same will follow here.
Because the new Renault Twingo is an affordable car, expect the interior to be simple but there will still be a central touchscreen – which would again replicate the innovative digital display of the original Twingo.
The new Renault Twingo is likely to use Google Android technology, which will allow the use of plenty of apps. Similar to other latest Renaults, it may even offer in-car video streaming, which will be stand-out tech for such an affordable city car.
It should be surprisingly roomy for a small car. Also expect plenty of interior practicality, something the original 1993 Renault Twingo excelled at.
2026 Renault Twingo battery, performance and efficiency
The new Renault Twingo will be a very efficient pure electric car, promises the French firm. The aim is best-in-class electricity consumption, meaning it will go further than any rival for each kWh of battery charge.
Full technical details of the new Renault Twingo are still some way off. It will have a cheaper, smaller-capacity battery than some of today’s electric cars, but its light weight should still deliver a decent range – expect over 150 miles and maybe even up to 200 miles. Restrict it to its city heartland and it will go even further.
Performance of the new Renault Twingo is unlikely to to be super fast – models such as the Alpine A290 will serve that purpose – but it will have snappy, city-friendly acceleration and low overall noise levels.
The new Renault Twingo is expected to have a front-wheel drive setup, which will be good for space-efficiency and give stable handling in the city.
Will the new Renault Twingo be petrol-powered?
The new Renault Twingo will only be offered as an EV. For those who prefer petrol, the latest Renault Clio is offered with a hybrid as well as a regular turbo engine.
Is the Renault Twingo a good car?
The Renault Twingo is an iconic model in the French firm’s line-up. We in Britain didn’t get the famous first generation car, which went on sale in 1993, but we did get the next two generations. Versions included the RenaultSport Twingo 133, which was fun to drive.
How much will the new Renault Twingo cost per month?
The new Renault Twingo’s affordable price will be combined with very competitive monthly prices, too. Renault is targeting a price of less than £70 a month. More details of how this will be achieved will follow later.
