The Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson are formidable alternatives plus there are new arrivals such as the Honda ZR-V.
The new Omoda 5 will be sold through a range of UK dealers, which is expected to grow when the new Omoda 5 arrives in early 2024. Expect growing interest in this Chinese new entrant brand as things builds towards its UK launch.
2024 Omoda 5 prices and release date
The new Omoda 5 is targeting a UK release in early 2024. Confirmation of timings is expected to follow later in 2023 – when new Omoda 5 prices will be announced, too.
We expect the new Omoda 5 to be priced from around £25,000. This competitive entry point will provide stern competition to models such as the Nissan Qashqai, particularly as the new Omoda 5 is anticipated to have a high standard spec and powerful turbo petrol engine.
2024 Omoda 5 styling, interior and technology
The new Omoda 5 has a very striking appearance from the front. It has an almost full-width grille with inset octagonal elements which flows from above the licence pate into the ultra-slim LED headlights. It has the illusion of creating a 3D effect.
The new Omoda 5’s headlights themselves have crisp LED running lights which blend into the grille. There are additional driving lamps lower down on either side, which sit above an F1 racing-style aero blade and lower air intakes.
From the side, the new Omoda 5 is a little more conventional. It has elements of mid-size SUV best-sellers such as the Nissan Qashqai. It has a black finish for the roof, creating a ‘floating’ effect which contrasts with the lower body colour.
The new Omoda 5 has bold wheelarches and rugged black lower styling elements, enhancing the SUV-like appearance. There are crisp lines that bulge above the front and rear wheelarches, adding interest to the side profile.
New Omoda 5 customers can choose from either 17-inch or 18-inch alloys. Novel options may include black-finish wheels with anodised red insides, for a striking appearance. They will complement other red elements as part of the styling pack.
At the rear, the new Omoda 5 has a full-width light car with crystal-like LED lights. The ‘Omoda’ script is written in the centre, so onlookers can easily identify this Chinese new entrant, and the lower bumper has a sporty diffuser-style effect.
Inside, the new Omoda 5 has a high-tech interior built around dual 12.3-inch high-res display. The centre display is a touchscreen, which hopefully will include Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as standard. There is a row of physical controls below – and a large stowage area that contains two wireless charging pads.
The new Omoda 5 has ambient lighting for a luxury feel at night, and top-end models have accommodating high-backed seats with integral head restraints. The dashboard features full-width air vents with metal-effect detailing, and copper-effect trim elements will also be an option.
The new Omoda 5 has a variable boot that stretches from 292 litres to 360 litres. This is smaller than class leaders such as the Nissan Qashqai, suggesting that the Omoda 5 priorities rear passenger space over total load capacity.
2024 Omoda 5 engines, performance and fuel economy
The new Omoda 5 will be powered by a 1.6-litre T-GDI petrol engine. It produces a healthy 197ps and 290nm of torque. The company is claiming a high level of thermal efficiency which places it top amongst Chinese engines. This should deliver good real-world fuel economy.
The new Omoda 5 will have a seven-speed DCT automatic gearbox as standard. The company has not yet confirmed performance or fuel economy details, but its generous power output should serve up 0-62mph acceleration in around 8.0 seconds. Expect average economy of around 40mpg.
The new Omoda 5 is based on the Chery T1X SUV architecture. Thanks to a suite of standard safety assist technology, it performed very well in the 2022 Euro NCAP new car safety tests, scoring a full five stars. The Peugeot 408 was tested in the same year, and only scored four stars.
The new Omoda 5’s advanced driver assistance system package includes a blind spot monitor, active cruise control, lane-keep assist, lane departure warning and numerous other features to “protect drivers and passengers”. An around-view monitor and reverse collision warning system are included too.
The new Omoda 5 measures 4400 long, 1830mm wide and 1588mm tall. It has a wheelbase of 2630mm.
An electric new Omoda 5 has recently been revealed in China. This has a 61kWh battery and a range of around 280 miles. It is due to go on sale in Australia in 2024 – and as that is a right-hand drive market, there’s the potential for it to go on sale in the UK too.
