Frankfurt Motor Show 2015: Last Defender to cost £10,000 – but it’s a pedal car

One of the stars of this week’s Frankfurt Motor Show was the last ever addition to the Land Rover Defender line-up. The concept car, which has an eye-catching price of just £10,000, is the last of the limited-edition vehicles being made to celebrate the end of production for this iconic Land Rover.

There’s just one problem. This handbuilt single-seater Defender is a pedal car suitable only for children up to seven years old...

Still, at least it'll be environmentally friendly as this zero emissions model using pedal power rather than Land Rover's trusty oil-burner.

On sale in spring next year, it's the latest vehicle to come out of JLR’s Special Vehicle Operations unit. Like the first ever pre-production Land Rover, it will wear the numberplate HUE 166.

The concept model is made using a rolled–edge aluminium frame complete with individual chassis number. It’s constructed precisely to scale and incorporates all of the Defender’s distinctive characteristics, such as protective chequer plating, cylindrical running bars and rugged off-road tyres complete with mudflaps.

A spokesman said, ‘The drive assembly is constructed to enable the young driver to pedal both forwards and backwards while a spring suspension and working brakes – complete with parking brake – will allow the little one to go on many big adventures.’

Inside, there’s that familiar dashboard, working hooter and rear stowage section with cover. There’s even a leather finish and trimmed seats and steering wheel.
