2021 facelifted Hyundai Kona revealed

Published 17 March 2021

Hyundai’s popular electric crossover, Kona Electric, has been given new styling details and tech upgrades for 2021.

The facelifted EV SUV will rival the likes of the Kia e-Niro and Skoda Enyaq iV, offering a 300-mile range. It's available to order from £30,625 after the Government's £2500 grant for electric vehicles (EVs).

The 2021 Kona Electric continues with a choice of a 39.2kWh battery with 136PS and a range of 189 miles or the 64kWh with 204PS and a range of 300 miles.

Hyundai says the refreshed EV can be charged from 10-80 per cent in 47 minutes through a 100kW rapid charger, with a full recharge from a 7.2kW charger taking six hours.

Hyundai Kona Interior

There’s a choice of three trims for the Hyundai Kona Electric — SE Connect, Premium and Ultimate. That entry-level SE Connect Kona is equipped with the 39.2kWh battery, while the longer-range 64kWh battery pack is available from £35,225 in Premium trim, or £37,375 (with the plug-in grant) on the Ultimate trim.

All cars will get a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display and an equally-sized infotainment system as standard across the range. Rear parking sensors with a rearview camera, keyless entry with stop/start and smart adaptive cruise control are all standard, too.

Premium spec adds LED headlights, heated front seats and steering wheel, as well as ambient lighting throughout the interior. Front parking sensors, electrically-folding mirrors and blind-spot assistance are all included as well. The top of the range Ultimate spec also gets an electric sunroof, a head-up display, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and leather upholstery.

The most notable exterior change is the removal of the grille panel, with the front end adopting a closed-off look that makes it easier to define from the non-electric Kona.

Hyundai Kona Rear

The Kona Electric’s new narrow LED daytime running lights and redesigned headlights feature, though the rear end looks much the same - with subtly reshaped lights.

New safety features for 2021 include blindspot assistance, rear cross-traffic assistance, safe exit warning and eCall - which automatically alerts the emergency services in the event of an accident.

The new Kona Electric is available with a choice of 10 exterior finishes, including six new colours. As with all Hyundai models, it’ll come with a five year, unlimited mileage warranty as well.

I find it odd that Hyundai has priced the Premium trim £225 above the £35000 Government limit for the £2500 grant. Surely they could have priced the Premium trim just under £35000 to expand it sales.

Slightly misleading headline for this article :-

"The updated electric SUV will rival the likes of the Kia e-Niro, offering a 300-mile range from £30,625 after the Government's £2500 grant for EVs."

The estimated 300 mile range car is only available from £38,225.

Isa, they have today just reduced the lower range premium model to £34,475.
