Peugeot 406 Coupe 2.2 hdi - esp intermittant fault also fuel cap open light - tam30560

This is an intermittant fault that only comes on when my daughter reaches 70 miles an hour, once this comes on the car goes into safe mode with the car becoming sluggish. It usually goes off when the car is left and started again, i have had into peugeot and they have checked all the wiringand seems to be fine and they say it could be a new esp unit which is 1000 pound . I read in one of the other messages it could be a faulty fuel filler cap sensor that can cause abs and other warning lights to come on can you please advise as she loves the car but cant afford the 1000 pound fix

In addition to the limp mode and the esp fault, does the read out say "anti pollution fault" or similar?

yes it says anti pollution fault we are just back from peugeot to pick the car up they said they have tested all the wiring and it is pointing to the esp ecu unit

OK, a few things for them to check before you part with £1000.

This engine had a tank containing Eolys fluid which has to be topped up every so often. It doses a pre-set amount into the fuel tank after filling up. If the fuel cap sensor is also faulty, it may not be dosing effectively. Or it may have run out of the fluid itself.

I had this same engine in a previous Citroen C5, and the ESP light only came on with the anti-pollution fault warning because of the limp mode. (i.e. ESP cannot work in limp mode, so it comes on about a second after the beep and the anti=pollution message.

I would recommend you get a second opinion as to whether it really is the ESP ecu, because that's a whole lot of money, when it could be a faulty turbo switch, or the pressure differential sensor between the egr valve and the DPF. Or just a broken swirl flap.

Unfortunately I have experience of having changed all these things with no solution, as the old plug-in fault code finder does NOT lead the tehnician to the faulty part, contrary to popular belief

You might be better finding a Peugeot/Citroen independent specialist to keep costs down, ask them specifically about their knowledge of the 2.2 HDi engine and all its foibles.

The last thing you want is to spend £1000 on an ecu only to find that the next time your daughter is doing 70, the car beeps, goes into limp mode and shows the engine management/ESP warning lights again.

Who says what?

Have you actually taken to a Peugeot agent and had it connected to "Planet" if you have and they say its the ESP than you can be pretty sure their correct.Mention to them that a faulty Eloy filler cap can cause the vehicle to go into LHM it happened to me but that was fixed at no charge and shows up on "Planet" as an exact fault plus a eloy filler cap sensor would not be intermitant.

What an absolute Arshloch k**** you really are !!!!

When I suggested taking a Renault to the dealer to have the fault codes read you couldn't have been more scathing in your nasty bullying remarks.

here you are telling this guy to do exactly that.

Anyone else fed up of reading this drivel ???

This is probably being caused by a blocking DPF ( FAP in Peugoet/ Citroen terms ). The 2.2Hdi was one of the first engines to be fitted with a DPF & it requires exchanging or cleaning out every 50k miles together with an Eolys fluid top-up & really is a car best to be avoided. If you search on here using Eolys, DPF, anti-pollution etc as search criteria for this car & the C5 you will find lots of info.

I love this car and would do everything in my power to keep this beauty breathing for years to come. ''LOCK UP YOUR DAUGHTERS'' used to be the cry when i went rolling through my hood in my super fly, street legal 406 HDI, cause the ladies cant resist a man in a sweet little Pug!

It was also when i reached 70mph...or was it 88?

I was lucky to own the ACTUAL back up car for the Delorian in Back to the Future but due to an intermittent problem similar to your own...and a few time travel issues...(got stuck in the 80s for a few days...or was it Dumbarton...either way we were glad to be back) ...I had to completely remove the flux capacitor which i would recommend suggesting to those boffins over at Peugeot to remove yours also...i believe its located under all that s***e in the boot!

Unfortunately though this resulted in my beloved Pug losing his status as Delorian...but dont be sad as it was perfect timing because in 2007 he landed the back up position for Bumble Bee in the Transformers...living the dream!!...until that b*st*rd intermittent fault returned and i had to remove the RMU (Robot Mode Unit)...every so often i would pull up at traffic lights next to a Prius and he would inadvertantly transform and monkey stomp the s*** out it...i miss not having the back up for my street fighting, i live in real rough area!

Really is more gangsta than The Sopranos, more pimp than Snoopy McDog...and there is more compartments than a Columbian Airline ;) ... not to mention it can do the quarter mile in 23 seconds flat!

The fault could also be a result of dampness as i experienced myself, which i rectified by removing the factory tint to allow light in, and the flat super soft plush marine carpet that had become quite moist over the years (that was my own touch, i was understandably a babe magnet).

Fitted with ''Almost Surround Sound'' (Trademark) with not only the ability to switch between AM and FM radio but Compact Disc Technology plus, as standard, Tow Bar, Bull Bar, Cargo Bar, Mars Bar...now tell me this doesn't justify spending £1000 for another summer of sheer awsomeness??

If however you would like to buy another car...Bumble Bee is for sale...my girlfriend doesnt like the attention i get from the ladies when i drive to the dump so im being forced to sell.

Hope this helps xxx
