Volkswagen Golf MK5 - Slight Juddering when breaking - Prince23

Hi All,

When just lightly applying the brakes I experience a sort of judder. Imagine how it feels when something is catching, its that type of problem, I get it worse at high speed but its also noticeable when crawling along with the brakes lightly applied. I have brand new O.E discs and pads all round (back brakes only fitted yesterday) so I'm certain its not a warped disc.

Any ideas what else it can be?

Has to be a warped disc surely? Jack up each front wheel and spin the wheel by hand. Is the judder coming from the front wheels?

Maybe describe it as a judder is the wrong word, it feels more like its catching, especially as low speed, at high speed then yeah it probably is more of a judder. I cant pinpoint exactly where its coming from, but like I say all discs and pads are brand new and I had the problem before/after new brakes.

Maybe the new brakes were not fitted correctly? Who fitted them?

It's really important to thoroughly clean the mating faces when fitting a new disk to a hub. If there is trapped dirt/rusk then the new disk may not run true which would cause a problem like you are experiencing.

Otherwise some/all of the new disks are warped.

I'd agree with cs above. Check the runout on the discs and ensure they are properly fitted to the hubs. When fitting new discs I wire brush (in a drill) the hub surface and clean down with white spirit or brake cleaner. Even a small amount of foriegn matter can affect disc alignment.

While having all the discs checked have a look and test at all the ball joints and suspension bushes.

The discs were fitted by Midlands VW who are very reputable VW specialists within the midlands. I might run it back in and get them to double check the discs and have a look at bushes/track rod ends etc

I have had and seen a lot of problems with so called OE discs warping, for a time I went back to nothing but genuine but recently I have dipped a toe in the Pagid pool to see what happens. Dirty and corroded wheel bearing hubs can cause new discs to warp but it has been a problem even on cars where they have been fitted fastidiously.
